How to remove data before turning in failed unit

My earlier post detailed the failure of my 14 month old VZN 700p. I now have my replacement (which came with the first update and needs the "partial" update). Before I return my bad unit to them, I want to be very very sure all the data is wiped out since I can't do a hard reset. Should I worry about my data ending up in someone else's phone? Would running over it and smashing it do the trick? Does someone know the actual location of the chip so I could put a bullet in that spot? I hope someone will take the time to give me some advice. TIA
