| In desperate need of help Hey All,
I have just recently purchased a treo 700p....It is my first time upgrading a phone since the I-90, and if any of you know what phone that is, you know it has been a while! hehe
This is my first palm and I am new to the entire world of palms and pda's...
I have a question about the treo though...
I'm wondering what software to download and mainly, where to download it from....It seems the software is SO expensive and I don't know what is legit and what isn't.
The main things I am looking to download is office(mainly word) and AIM. I thought I would be able to get a free version of AIM but I guess not.
Anyway, if you guys had any advice, I would truly appreciate it!
Thanks so much,
Matt |

Your 700P should have a program called "Documents to Go" on it (you probably need to install it from your CD). This will enable you to sync documents with Word (you can also sync Excel and PowerPoint docs with it).
This site is trustworthy. You can also check out mytreo.net and treonauts. I've bought from both of those without any problems. Most software you can try for 15 or 30 days - don't pay for anything until you've tested it out and made sure it's what you want.
The first thing you should get is a good "uninstall" program - this will make sure that, if you decide to delete a program, all the residual databases and settings will go away, too. I use DestallerPro, and it's worked great for me. You also should get a backup program. I use RescoBackup. And make sure to get the freeware FileZ. It will help you with file management.
Someone else will have to help you with your instant messaging question - I use Chatopus for GoogleTalk.
Just ask as you run into more questions! Enjoy your Treo! |

| I have also purchased from the store thi site is part of without issue. You can also find software at www.palmgear.com and www.handango.com but keep in mind that Handango has a bad habit of charging a redownload fee of $3-6 per application so you can have the priviledge of getting the app again (updates included) for a year. So I always find a software site I can use, trust and stick with them. Also when you find an app you like look for the developers web site and see if you can buy directly from them and what the upgrade policy is.

I rarely will purchase a 3rd party app (other than PDANet/PDAReach) as they are expensive and I am too cheap. Fear of compatability and what might be hidden in the code are the main reasons I stear away from freeware. It is about time my Treo is used to its fullest as well as for what it was meant for. With DestallerPro I will feel like testing more app's. FYI: If anyone is a student, graduate, faculty/staff or affiliate of a major college or university there are many free security programs offered for the Treo and PC. Just log in and access the "eServices" department and you should be directed to the various app's available.
Respectfully submitted.

Here are a couple places you can get freeware: http://www.freewarepalm.com/ http://palmtops.about.com/cs/alterna...20Freeware.htm http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fu...rREF=&siteid=1
This is by no means an end-all list, just a couple I've used or found with Google.

Sorry I'm so lost! lol | Do not worry about being "lost." We all are at first. Undoubtedly you have already read the post from a new position here at ET called a Moderator. This well deserved position was recently granted to user kdallen (congrats kd). Follow his links and directions. I also previously posted the following in the 650 discussion: Browse the ET Knowledgebase or official Palm site for this and you will find some. You could also "google." CAUTION: Make sure that they are from reputable sites to avoid something you would not wish to adversely affect/infect either your PC or Treo. Also, be careful to avoid any copyright infringements.
Additionally, as mentioned in my last post, your university will undoubtedly have a security section within their IT Services Department. This is a good source for sanctioned mainstream PC and Treo protection from viruses and other malware. As long as you are a affiliated with the college in any way (i.e. Student, Alum, Prof, Faculty, Staff etc...) it is legal to download, use and update this software as often as needed for any/all computers or devices supported which you currently operate.

Handango.com is a trusted source of several Treo (among other manufacturers) applications. There are three versions. The "Lite" version is free while the "Pro" version is $14.95. There is also a Trial period offer which is also free for a short testing period. As previously mentioned, remember to always use a trial version (when available) prior to purchasing any software. Personally, I would download the Trial version and upgrade if satisfied as you will definitely need this product. I found that out the hard way. Good luck. F.Y.I First searched was the ET Store but found it by using Google Search.
