I'm not aware of any app that allows you to map buttons to certain functions within other applications. I'd imagine that would be nearly possible to create, as different apps would present so many different possiblities, depending on what they did, how they did it and how they were written.

When you get in to the "mass" defintion of buttons, you stand the extremely good probability of a conflict somewhere down the line, and not too far down the line at that. It would involve everyone's applicaton checking for button layout, then one program undoing another program's layout, it would be difficult to manage and as a result is not a feature that is widely supported.

I used for a short time one application that did what you are wanting and it seriously slowed the device down. Every time an application was launched, the application had to make changes and it ended up trashing my device, which at that time was a Treo 600. A report back to the developer resulted in his stopping developement and never releasing it.

I've often thought of the same thing, but as far as I know, such a critter doesn't exist. But if you find one... feel free to post details back here.

I'm not entirely sure, but aren't there some proggies that use specific buttons functionally, but only during execution?

That is the way most run; however, there are some that do a background kind of thing, like the app I played with a while back. Such applications make it VERY difficult to track problems down if we should forget something...and forget we shall and did.
