    Default Newbie needs install help

I have just unwrapped my Treo 700 and am trying to install my first application. The instructions seemed simple enough but apparently not. I downloaded a .prc file which is supposed to launch the install tool. However, the file type is unrecognized. How do I install the silly thing? TIA.

You have to install Palm Desktop.
Once you do, a program called Palm Installer will pop up when you double click the .prc file.
You can get the Palm Desktop software from Palm.com

Thanks for the reply. I already have that. I've used it to do install the app but all that seems to happen is that it shows up in MyDocuments. There is no feedback anywhere that the software was installed.

Open up Palm Installer and drag the PRC into the box

We (I) better get my terminology straight. Are you talking about the desktop or on the palm. I cannot find an install tool on the palm and the installer from the desktop is how I got it into My Documents.

Open up Palm Desktop on your PC. (I am not at home, so I am guessing)
Then open up Palm Installer, it should be a choice.
    Then drag the PRC there
I know it's fun to play with your new toy, but there is a ton of (easy to follow) instructions in the manual.

Yep. That's what I did. Unfortunately the manual is no help. I think what is happening is that the software is getting installed but unlike Windows, there is nothing to tell one that the install was successful. When I try to go to settings it apprears that what I need is there. Why is there no feedback on the Palm, when software is successfully installed? Can I delete the uploaded install file once the install is done? Thanks again.

Let us complicate this a bit further. Once you get the hang of the Palm Desktop, there is an application called Pilot Install - read up about it here. Playing and learning is fun.

If you watch the hotsync proceed on the PC, you'll see it cycle through all the conduits (calendar, contacts, tasks, etc). If I remember, installing third-party software is the first step in the hotsync process and that's when you should see a notation that the software is being installed. You should also see some confirmation in your Hotsync Log (right-click hotsync icon in system tray > View Log). It might show something like this:

    - Installed file: C:\Program Files\palmOne\TREO\Install\GoogleMaps.prc
    OK Install
    OK Quick Install

Finally, you should also see a new icon for your third-party app on your device.

    Sincerely
    Kevin

I think something else is going on if his PC doesn't correctly associate a .prc with Palm Desktop.
