Wanted to post this here, just for the heck of it

A friend of mine came over with his new IPhone last night. DAMN........

Now I see what all the fuss is about. Couple of things I was wondering.

He told me that since the Palm Desktop software is compatible with the Mac OS, that if I loaded the Palm Desktop software on a Mac, performed a HotSync from my 700p to the Mac, that the Mac would then be able to convert all my information to the Mac/IPhone user format (Contacts and Calendar are the main things I'm worried about), and be able to sync everything to the IPhone that I have on my 700p.

Any knowledge of this (Benji)?

This isn't something I'm planning on doing in the near future, but certainly is something I'd be curious to know, when the time comes................

My only experience with the iPhone is a few minutes playing with one, nothing on syncing it other than what I have read. Playtime was interesting, as I could not type on it accurately at all. It felt good, was comfy, just not something I was able to use. The owner had it for 2 weeks and was much better than I at getting around, though he had problems still hitting the keys accurately and was definitely unable to use it with one hand. He also complained about the PIM, setting appointments, editing, et cetera.

I came away from the time I used it and his occasional discussions that it was not for me. One handed use is a must for me, as is the ability to edit documents/spread sheets and email.

On to the question though - when I asked about conversion, his response a day later was no, it would require manual entry.

I have done some Googling concerning comparisons and there are a number of articles out there.

Yes, this can easily be done. The first thing would be to install Palm Desktop and initialize a HotSync between your Treo and the Mac. The next step would be to set up iSync. This basically allows you to sync your Treo between iCal and Address Book. These are the apps used by the iPhone when you sync your data. Once you've completed a sync between the Treo and iSync, the data will move to the iPhone when you sync it with your Mac. Syncing on the iPhone occurs in iTunes and that's one thing which is flawless. Never have I had an issue with syncing the iPhone and it's quite fast.

Of course, any additional questions you have related to the iPhone can found at EverythingiCafe (the website formerly known as EverythingiPhone.). You could also ask here and I'd be happy to help.

For Treo owners considering the jump, I'd be sure to spend time with the keyboard. Also, email can be a bit tricky if you have mulitple accounts. With the iPhone, it requires a few taps to move from account to account.

Whatever your choice, I hope to see you in one of the 'everything' communities.
