Question PDANet

I both use it and love it. Think it's the best thing since sliced bread (other than the Treo). From what I understanding, SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME IF WRONG and help me here, with the 700p on an EVDO network PDANet is not needed. The only reason I use it is that there is no additional data charges with Sprint (even with the unlimited plan) if they catch you using the device as a modem.

GREAT POST WITH A POTENTIAL QUESTION WITHIN THIS REPLY

Respectfully submitted.

I am also confused as to the use/purpose of PDANet. Is it just a way of getting around paying the extra monthly amount for the "phone as a modem" option? I have the 2nd tier PowerVision on my 700p, and I am trying PDANet right now. It works just fine, but am I going to be charged for it? Does PDANet somehow mask the Internet usage and make it look like I am using the Internet on the phone instead of on the PDA (hence there would not be a need for the "phone as a modem" option). When you guys say you need a data plan, are you referring to PowerVision? Or the "phone as a modem" plans...?

Favorite Confusion Abounds

You are right in thinking that it is a way of getting around paying the extra for "phone as a modem" where Sprint is concerned. Not positive about VZW but have heard that it works that way as well. PDANet does place a disclaimer regarding this matter, however. All it does is make the computer recognize the device (phone) as a "modem" like the one you probably already have installed inside your computer itself. When PDANet is initiated, it dials #777, authenticates with their (PDANet's) servers to ensure that you are a valid paid or trial user (a two week period you should take advantage of as some systems are not compatable - by systems I refer to the equipment and/or software on your PC/Laptop/MAC or WIN OS) and turns you over to your service provider. After much research and testing this is what has been determined from my end. Note: The 700 dials #777 each and every time it accesses your service provider (VZW positively does this as well).

We refer to the "UNLIMITED Data Plan" is the answer to your next question. That is what allows you the Internet connection between your phone and service provider at a flat rate, free of additional DATA charges.

As I have not received my 700p and am still using a FUBAR'ed 650, I haven't been able to see if my systems automatically recognize the 700 as a modem on its own. If so, from what I understand you will not need PDANet. As stated above, that is its primary purpose. The 650 is NOT recognized as a modem by your computer without PDANet. That leads to the question regarding the 700p/w. Then again, why would they put it out for the 700 if it is automatically recognized by your PC or Laptop as a modem. Plug it in and find out if you computer recognizes it (go to start - control panel - modems). If you see the 700 listed it has been recognized and you will have to set up the connection manually. We can work on that issue later as the settings are crucial to avoid additional charges. I have to test mine first. It will arive in a few days.

It may all sound confusing and rambling as I have been up for the last 40 hours straight. Basically, as I said, Sprint is my provider with an unlimited data plan. With PDANet I am NOT charged extra when connecting with my PC/Laptop. WHEW!! Hang tight. I will test this out myself or if there is someone else out there try it for both of us. My friend just got the 700w with VZW and will be testing out theory soon. He is another MS/CISCO/LINUX/NOVELL Network Administrator as am I. He does this as an employee for one company (M-F/8-5) while I do it when I feel like it and this is only one of my many business ventures. I am also an IT employer who handles many employees and clients (other than my own networks).
