What you could do is set up "hot keys". For instance, let's say call work often. Set up a speed dial favorites button and this will allow you to set up a QuickKey. In this case, we'll say "w". Holding "w" will result in automatically dialing that contact.

I don't believe so. This method gives more options and is a bit more intutitve. You can use letters based upon the name of the caller.

    1. Press the Phone button.
    2. Using the 5-way navigator, select a free favorites button
    3. Select Menu > Edit Favorites Button
    4. Lookup your wife using the Lookup feature
    5. Enter W in Quick Key
    6. Press OK
    7. That's it, press and hold W to call your wife.

do these hotkeys only work while in phone mode? for instance, if you are in the middle of your email program, can you hold and press a letter to activate the hotkey? because it wouldnt work for me!

No, to dial the hotkey, you need to be using the phone. (Imagine the nightmare if you are using an email program and everytime you type a letter, the phone dials!)
You can make a call from the contacts list, just type the first initial of the first name and start typing the last name to quickly find an entry.
So to call Tom Smith, dial "T","S","M" (assuming there are no others with similar letters, you should see the entry. Scroll down (if Tom has more than one number), then when the appropriate number is highlighted, press the center button. Alternatively, you could start typing "S","M", etc. without the initial from the first name, but both methods work.
