Default Slow response time when entering contacts

I have a 700P and have installed the firmware upgrade (1.10 Sprint). I am using the embedded "Contacts" program which came with my Treo.

    Here's the problem:
When entering new/editing contacts on the handheld I get a 8-10 second lag before I am able to progress to my next entry. Most entries are done in the field and I am unable to enter them later on my desktop as the information is time-sensitive. Yes, I know that's a lot of contacts! My old Zire 72 would respond instantaneously as I have loaded the same contacts on it as a test. Both units use the same processor, slightly different software, widely different results.

P.S. I have 1536 contacts, 29MB free space, no hacks

    any suggestions ???????

Yep, the number of contacts and the time require to index them is a problem. This has been discussed in depth by the developer of DateBook/Pimlico Software on a number of occasions. There is no cure other than to reduce the number of contacts.

Yeah, I'm working with 935 contacts at this time, and also notice that when any modifications/edits are done to existing contact entries, or any "new" contacts are added, the "lag time" is getting longer & longer. Guess it's just the "nature of this beast", and as long as all else if functioning properly, is something I'll just deal with.

I went looking for the discussion in the Yahoo/Pimlico user group and could not find it - anyway, he has posted detailed info on this a couple of times - it is an indexing issue - takes X amount of time per contact times the number of contacts, et cetera.
