    Default Treo 700p Ringtone Tutorial

    1. Open Audacity on your computer.
    2. Open up whatever full mp3 song you want to convert.
    3. Hit stop. You can't edit a song while it's playing.
    4. Figure out which 20-30 second part of the song you want to use as a ringtone. Highlight that part by click dragging in the display window. It will highlight that portion. Once it's highlighted, go to Edit, the hit Trim. You'll just have the portion of the song in the display window.
    5. Go to Edit, then Preferences, then Quality. Change the sample rate to something low (like 11025Hz).
    6. Go to File Format, then Uncompressed Export Format. Choose "WAV Microsoft 4-bit", and hit OK. The small window will close.
    7. Go to File, Export Selection as WAV. The popup window will give you name choice (make sure there are no periods in the name) and the type should be WAV. Save it wherever. I put it on my desktop since it would only be there a short time.
    8. Email the file to yourself.
    9. Open your email on the Treo and download the attachment. You'll get a popup window on the Treo saying it can support it, do you want to install. Hit Install. It wil put it in the Voice Memo app.
    10. Open voice memo, highlight the song, hit the menu button. Under Voice memo, the bottom choice is Copy to Ringtone. Select that and it will show up in your tones.

hey man, thanks for the new thread and your time and your great response.

everything you said works out EXCEPT one thing.

i successful do all the steps. get it into voice recorder. and it sounds PERFECT.

then it hit, copy to ringtone. then it says "Successfully copied" or whatever it says.

Then i go to ringtones to select it and it botches the .wav file. I mean, it play the first 2 seconds perfectly then starts to mess the song up. i go back to voice recorder, and its' fine. try again, and then in ringtones, it doesn't work perfectly.

it's as if the copy to ringtone part messes the .wav up.

    what do you suggest?

it seems as tho it's cutting out the song because i upload a 1meg wav file and it tops off the ringtones at 195.4k. So it's only playing the very very beginning, and the ubruptly stopping and repeating again.

how do you scale a 1 meg wav to a 200k wav?

I'd suggest trying it again. I guess something didn't go right in the Treo's native ringtone conversion. Use the voice memo app to play the .wav file and see how it sounds there. If it sounds ok, delete the ringtone and try it again with the same .wav file.

Once you cut the 20-30 second part of the song you wanted, the quality settings for saving the .wav file will determine file size. Approx. 1MB seems about the smallest you can get the clip with Audacity.

awesome. i was able to get it smaller by changing the 44000 to 8000.

is there a way around the limit size of 195k for ringtones?

does ringo allow you to use 1meg mp3s?

does that program (ringo) corrupt the phone at all? i already have enough soft resets as it is.

I don't have any Ringo experience. I know it lets you use your actual mp3's and I'd guess it probably just has you pick a part of the song.

Do a search on Ringo and see what people have to say about it. There's probably at least 1 thread out there that can help you.
