| Treo crashes when connected to the USB sync cable My Treo 700p continues to crash when I connect it to the USB sync cable. It goes into a continuous reset loop. After a manual reset and holding the five way key up, it recovers (this process took sometime to discover since I finally decided on a hard reset). Now, the Treo crashes on hotsync. Apparently, several applications may be causing the scenario. First, screenshot5 appeared on the crash log; then PDACookbook appeared on the crash log.
I removed screenshot5, yet have not tried uninstalling PDACookbook. I am hoping for some additional suggestions before resorting to a hard reset. In addition, I have been away for a couple weeks and have valuable data to sync with my desktop.
Let me know if you have any troubleshooting ideas. I am still figuring how to lock troublesome applications without an external application (Remember I cannot sync the Treo and install another utility).
From the phone application, dial ##377 and the Treo returns the crash log.

Unfortunate as your situation is, it shows how important backing up can be. Quote:

Along the same lines, you may be able to download Resco Backup OTA. Then you'd be able to selectively restore, another process which might help you out (you could attempt to ID potentially corrupted files).
If some trial and error with locking doesn't do it, you may well be looking at a hard reset, though another option may be attempting to uninstall your recently-installed apps.
And last, but not least, have you tried a bluetooth sync?

| These problems look fairly severe. Yesterday, my Treo was inoperable for 4 hours (no calls in or out). The Treo would not activate the phone radio. I would make some progress and then the Treo would go into a continuous reset loop. The Treo would not respond to the usual reset parameters. I was finally able to restore the device with a three day old backup.
When I plugged the Treo into the USB cable, it began the continuous reset loop again. The crash log returns an “unknown application.” These issues reside in a recent backup. I have older backups on my SD card; yet as I mentioned in my previous post, I have valuable information accumulated from my recent trip (hence the reason my Treo has not been synced in a couple weeks).
Please let me know if you have any additional advice. I am thinking about a hard reset; restoring a month old backup; and selectively restoring some files from the most recent backup. But I am unsure what databases correspond to each application (like contacts, snapper mail, minute plus, etc). Let me know if a FAQ exist with this information. |

But I am unsure what databases correspond to each application (like contacts, snapper mail, minute plus, etc). Let me know if a FAQ exist with this information. | It's possible you have 2 separate issues going on, if I'm understanding you correctly: a hardware or hardware-induced problem with your USB cable, and some corrupted files/databases.
How about this: since you have a fairly recent backup (I'm assuming you can't get it to perform another...if so, do one), try popping your card into your computer, your card reader, or downloading a trial of Card Export II, and making a copy of your card on yor computer (I do this weekly). This will give you your recent (worst case, 3 days old) info from your trip in a safe place.
Execute the hard reset, restoring your PIM data (use the files you got from the card; if all goes well, you'll have that info as current as can be). After that, provided there are no problems, go on to your apps one by one. I'd go with an uninstaller, file mgr (this will allow you to ID files by creator ID, so you can ID which .dbs go with which apps for your selective restore) and your backup app first. After that, go on to any that has recent pertinent info from your trip. Perform a backup after each app you add! This should keep you from having to start all over again, once you ID the problem. Once you have, your choices are: 1. go to an old backup set for that app/database, and grab that info, either using trial-and-error to find out how recent you can go or 2. decide how much you're willing to lose and pick a backup set for that app that works and live with it. Continue the process until your Treo's as current as can be.
Have you tried the bluetooth sync to see if you've got a hardware problem with your sync cable? It's very likely. The cables have a history of problems. Have you tried any other USB ports to see if it's the port?

| The issue was resolved after several hours with PalmOne support. Unfortunately, they were not a big help (It was my suggestion and the support specialist had already given me another number to call for additional assistance).
The solution: Disconnect the USB cable and plug it into my laptop then reconnect the USB cable to my desktop. My laptop did not have any Hot Sync software and was USB 1.1. The device detection sequence may have realigned a stuck hot sync buttom and the Treo USB connection (my only thought).
I had already tried switching USB port without success. This explanation is not ideal, yet it may help someone search through this forum.
Remember I had already performed a previous restore, which handled some corrupted files issues. The continuous reset loop had damage some files in the first go around. Now, I was able to successfully hot sync the Treo. Thanks for everybody’s comments. |

| Not sure I follow the solution but I'm glad you're good to go.

| I was reading in the Palm knowledge base for information about usb in relation to the Verizon update problems and came across information regarding usb and usb portsn on your computer and it indicated that you should use the rear usb ports on your desktop as opposed to the front mounted ones which its says are normally just an internal usb hub instead of the back conections and the front port may not have considstent voltage or as much voltage as needed. I suspect that it might be sufficient to cause a problem such as you are experiencing. Its just a thought should you experience further difficulties in this regard |

I was thinking about one of the over-the-network solutions, but I hear there's a conflict with ChatterEmail... |

| from what I read in the threads in this forum backupbuddy in some form or fashion is preferred by most. You might go the ET store and check the software section out and see what they have and they should have reviews either with the product. If not review the extensive thread about favorite software look at the people posting who list whats on their palm and see what backup program most of them use and why. Most will have free trials so you can use a trial to back up and see how you like and go from there. Good luck |
