Apps built specifically for WM or Palm will not be compatible. Microsoft Office Documents might not be compatible if you are running docs to go on a palm and beam them to a WM device. But often times, I will drop a word document onto my SD card, plug it into the Treo and open it with Docs to go. It does the converting stuff right on the Palm. as far as excel running on a Palm, it works GREAT with Docs to go. And Docs to go is included with the Palm OS CD. I have never tried to beam a contact to a WM Treo, so I am not sure that is compatible either. The bottom line: they are both decent OS's. It really comes down to personal preference.
