"Update ROM Image" screen

A few days ago my VZN 700p suddenly displayed a message about not finding a sync connection--as though I had pressed the hotsync button on the connector. I wasn't anywhere near a connector--I was out shopping. I told it to cancel and all was well for a few hours when it did it again. In the last several days the problem became more frequent and saying "cancel" didn't break the apparent loop. So I started soft resetting it which worked for a while. Last night it refused to come out of the loop. So I left the battery out of it all night and this morning all I see is three lines in tiny red letters on a white screen. They say: Update ROM Image? YES = <UP> button NO = any other button.

I have had almost no problems with this Treo 700p since I bought it in July 2006. I have no 3rd party applications. I have a good backup but I'm a little afraid of doing a hard reset. Any words of wisdom from those more experienced than I? Thanks.

Update: After chatting online with Palm tech support, talking by phone with Palm tech support, talking by phone with Verizon tech support I was referred to Asurian to make a claim against the insurance policy. (I purchased my 700p on July 28, 2006 so it isn't in warranty with Palm). My new phone will arrive on Monday. After reading about people having to get up to 6 phones to find one that works, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is an OK one.
