    Default Work E-mail......

I've tired almost everything but cant get my treo to download my work email. I even went to the IT department and was told they dont support Treo only BB. We have exchange server, but I cant get the settings. I dont want to go to a BB, so please help me wipe that smirk off the IT guy face

The type of phone you use is not so relevant as the mail server protocols that are in use on your work email system. If your work email system supports POP or IMAP (two typical protocols) then pretty much any phone can access email. (Versamail and Chattermail supports both.) The Palm 700p also supports Exchange Active Sync if your email Exchange server supports that protocol. It really shouldn't be that hard to get your email unless your work email server ports are locked down. But you do need to know what protocols are supported, and whether or not you have to be logged into a VPN to be granted access to the appropriate server ports.

My IT department says they "don't support PDAs," but it is trivial to access email via IMAP which they do support. The only problem is that our IT folks have locked down the outgoing server ports, so I need to be logged into a VPN, or have to use a Gmail outgoing mail server to send email.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the email settings, but cant tell what it supports. Sometimes I have to go through the webmail on the treo but that is a hassle. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for in the outlook settings?

You really need to talk to the IT folks and ask them what protocols they support. For example, if it is possible to configure Thunderbird or another third-party email client (not Outlook) to read email, then you should be able to use the same settings on your phone.

For an IMAP account, your configuration would be something like this. This is adapted from an IMAP Gmail account:

    Incoming server: imap.gmail.com (enable SSL)
    Outgoing server: smtp.gmail.com (enable TLS)

Your username would be "username" or in some cases the entire string "username.mydomain.com" (Gmail typically requires the whole string in most clients). You will have to find out the names of your incoming and outgoing servers. Sometimes the incoming server is something like webmail.mydomain.com instead of imap.mydomain.com. It all depends on how your email service is set up.

Usually, the default ports are OK to use, but your provider may use different ones. The only other options to determine is whether or not your provider is using SSL or TLS protocols. If so, check the appropriate boxes. In Versamail or Chattermail, the default port numbers are automatically changed if you select these options, but you can set them manually if they differ from defaults.

Some providers may require that you be logged into a virtual private network (VPN) in order to send mail through their server. Check with IT to see what is required. They really should know, and if not, they may support IMAP or Exchange Active Sync with default settings. (My college doesn't "support PDAs" but they in fact have enabled most all of the desirable IMAP features, including push Email.) I finally coaxed out of them which protocols and ports were in use and tried various settings and username formats until I got it to work.

Try ChatterEmail. I use it for my work (webmail._____.com) Microsoft Outlook Web Access email. When you set up the account on Chatter choose Microsoft Exchange Account and use your webmail.____.com for exchange server. You can also use your hard code address. To get that on your PC go to start, then run, type "cmd" (enter). In the command prompt then type: "ping webmail._____.com". Your hard code will be a four sets of two or three numbers separated by periods. Definitely give the free trial a go. I also use it for my personal AOL account and find it much better and easier than Versamail.
