Default Backup Treo

OK, crazy question... On my old Windows Mobile devices, I could backup/restore the system to my PC, or to my SD chip.

Ummm, how can I do that now?

I see in ActiveSync on the PC there's a Backup/Restore option, but as soon as I establish a partnership, or even a Guest connection, that goes away.

I see nothing on the Treo itself.

I saw a link in the PDF manual, and it took me to Palm.com, where there are only two apps for the 700...

Any thoughts?

If memory serves... I had read that MS had removed the backup utility that was in Windows Mobile 2003 from WM5.0. We have to rely on a 3rd party app now. I haven't found one yet that is WM 5.0 certified.

I have my eye on Sprite Backup - I think they have a new version of their backup program in Beta that will support WM5.0.

I'm a big Sprit fan, been using it for years, free AND paid.

I just downloaded it. Other than it being a little slow, it is great.

Skipster...Which version of Sprite Backup/Recovery did you download? Their site said that Windows Mobile is not available yet.

There was a link from within their forums for the beta version that supports WM5.0. However, I think the users in that forum mentioned that the beta install expired today (Feb. 1st). I don't know if they posted an extended beta or if the final release is ready.

Update: I guess I should have looked before posting.

"Sprite Software is very pleased to announce that the Windows Mobile 5 version of the award-winning Sprite Backup application will be released on the 7th of February. There will be no update to the Beta release of Sprite Backup, as the release is so close."

Skipster,

I looked on their website and did not see any referrence to free version. Where did you fine free version and how is it different from the paid version?

Also can you use it to backup to pc or do have to use SD card?

I had problems with Active Sync and Version customer support had me do a hard reboot to solve the problem. So it would have been nice to a backup of all the system settings and speed dial settings. I look forward to some backup software.

The following is shown on Sprite site. It seems confusing since we call the Treo700w a smartphone. Are you sure ours is what they call a Pocket PC?

From Sprite Web Site
If you are not sure which version of Sprite Backup is right for your mobile device, try looking for these distinguishing features:

» If your device is touchscreen, and has a "Start" button displayed somewhere on the screen, it is a Pocket PC
» If your device is not touchscreen, has a number keypad and works with ActiveSync software, it is a Smartphone
NOTE: Sprite Backup does not currently support Windows 2005 SmartPhone devices. Support for these devices will be added starting the 1st of March 2006

I believe that our device is "technically" a pocket PC, but marketed as a "smartphone". I bought the Pocket PC version of Sprite Backup and it works fine.
