Default Can I use Treo with basic phone service?

I'm looking to buy this new phone but only want to transfer my basic phone service now. So I don't want to have internet access, just basic phone service, is this possible?

I'm about 99% positive that verizon will only sell this phone (or activate it) if you buy a data plan.

I have one with Verizon and no data plan. A rep advised me how to delete the account info for connecting to the Internet because if I do use it w/o the data plan, I believe I would be charged an insane per kb rate.

when you purchase the phone, ask to be sure that the data features are "DISABLED", not charged "a la carte". otherwise, if you inadvertantly launch IE and the #777 is dialed, you will be charge per KB charges. If they disable the data features, then you will get an error if the #777 is dialed for whatever reason.

So in other words activate the phone with NO DATA PLAN WHATSOEVER? Does Verizon allow this?

I'm also looking to get the Treo without a data pkg. However, the Verizon rep I spoke to advised me that I had two choices: either the unlimited data plan (xtra $50/month) or the pay-as-you-go data plan. He then said that the Treo automatically "pings" the internet every 2-5 minutes and this would count against my minutes and result in huge overages if I chose the pay-as-you-go plan. He never mentioned that I could get the phone WITHOUT a data plan as you're suggesting.

Was this just a misinformed Verizon Rep?

How do you delete the account info and prevent access to the internet?

Default No Internet

As I understand the "pinging" it is only if you download and activate the "Wireless Sync" added software. I have not -- and so I do not think I ping:rolleyes:

The ability to delete internet connections (e.g., the Verizon EVDO connection) appears to be there (there is a menu option). I could delete mine if I choose. Have not tested it.

ALSO, I disable all internet connections (as required by Regulations:mad: ) everytime they close the door on the jet. "Flight Mode" (of course that cuts phone service too).

Default Get The Rebates!!!

My local Rep/Manager said, "Activate the Data Plan!" That way you can get the best rebates. For example, the phone is only $99 if you get it from Buy.com (sorry Chris). But, that requires activation of the Data plan.

I don't know if there's a minimum requirement, or if you can cancel after 30 days or so. check out the Terms.

I'm not sure how it works with Buy.com and other wireless providers. However, I happen to know with some certainty that with Verizon wireless that trick will not fly. If you cancel the data pkg after receiving the rebates associated with it, Verizon will rescind the rebate and charge your account.

It never hurts to try, but be prepared to have the data pkg rebate overturned.

I recently purchased the phone on ebay. I love it! I also wanted a pure PDA and phone without data service. So I figured out a variation to disabling the data connection and it worked.

I deleted the EVDO and data connection by going to
>start
>settings
>connections
>under "My ISP" click on the "manage existing modem connection"
>hold down on the "Broadband Connection" and delete!

Works for me. I went back to IE and tried to connect and it won't. YES!
