Contacts and Scrolling Through (or not) From the Today Screen- Pocket Informant

First of all, I've been using Pocket Informant for about four years, and don't want to give it up just because I switched from a PDA to the Treo 700wx.

Here's the problem:

At the Today screen, when I press the menu button and choose Contacts, the window opens into my Pocket Informant Contacts. So far, so good. Then (sometimes), the search bar will populate with letters from previous phone number searches and I cannot scroll through my contacts to make a call. I can fix the problem if I open PI and go into Contacts, then exit back out.

Am I doing something wrong? I'd like to be able to use my PI Contacts list from the Today screen using the menu button, with one hand.....
