data plan needed? - Treo Forums

I have done a lot of reading about this but I just want to confirm this. I am getting a friends old 700w and just going to activate it and use it. I dont have a data plan and dont want one. I just want the use of the treo w/ the ability to surf the web and have it check my email...dont need that.

Anyways, can I use this phone w/o the data plan? Also will it try and update it self and rack up my bill?

Is there anyways I can disable the internet features so it cant connect?

Do you have Verizon, Alltell or Sprint?

You can call Verizon and have them block the data plan so that it errors out when trying to connect. I did that so I won't connect and rack up charges. They can do it, don't let them tell you they can't. I've done on all 3 of my last pocket pc phones. Good luck.

i have heard if you do that though you can not send or receive pix messages.

That is true. The data plan is needed for you to download the picture. I forgot about that. That is the drawback, but doesn't really affect me. I've had 2 pictures sent to me in the past year, and I don't really send them either. But it's good to know I can't possibly download data accidentally and get charged for it.

yeah that is true. i get maybe one or 2 a year so not a big deal.
