I found an easy way to close programs and free up memory.

Press and hold the OK button for a couple of seconds. This brings up a screen that lists the programs that are running that you can kill. Close only those that you want or close them all at once.

Be aware! If you have ActiveSync running in the automatic mode (this is the default). It will start up again.
