Someone correct me if I'm wrong.......I believe the GPS that comes in the phone is a transmitter only. You would need an external GPS reciever.

The GPS on the 700w is not really a GPS...it is just a locator for 911 purposes. You'll need an external GPS to get location tracking info.

Once I get a GPS reciever, can I use googlemaps as the software basis for my gps system?

I believe it can just pinpoint you on the map. I don't thing it gives you directions like Magellen/TomTom.

GPS and google maps
I have downloaded the google maps but do not have the GPS reciever yet. My question is, if I have the GPS, does it work like a true gps with verbal directions?

NO; If you have only a rcvr then all you have is the ability to link your position to a mapping base, which may or may not interface with Googlemap.
As far as verbilization is concerned, absolutly not; verbilized directions are a function of the purpose built GPS software you purchase. It contains a data base of words that fit the vocabulary the software uses; Google map has no verbalization software built into it and your phone has only what it needs to voice dial, etc (if you have that capability)
For example: if GoogleMap dirctiions are "over the hill to Grandma's house" those exact words need to reside in a database accessable to some software to interprate them - your phone does not come with it, the GPS rcvr does not have it, GoogleMpas does not have it - so, no spoken directions.
Generally, you dont get something for nothing.
