Default Holding out for a Palm OS 6/Linux Treo

I am holding out hope that a new Treo running either Palm OS 6 Cobalt or Palm OS for Linux will emerge soon... I love my Treo 650, but I would love the multitasking ability of those platforms, coupled with a Palm-based Treo capable of Wifi. Obviously, at a press conference with Bill Gates present, this would not be a topic Mr. Colligan would address, but hopefully it will come to pass...

Sounds like you will be waiting a while. It has been what 2 years since they came out with a new operating system. If you have an advantage now with technology why not use it.

I agree with your sentiment...but I also am fine waiting because I enjoy my Treo 650 very much. If it weren't for a lack of wifi (that sled makes the thing way too big), I wouldn't even be thinking about upgrading.

While I am quite sure there has/had been a Cobalt Treo in the works/testing; at this point, I am not even sure that Palm is going to release it. It would be nice if they did. I'd be right there with the rest of you in line (honestly, I bought a 600 just to get used to the Treo design so that a Cobalt Treo wouldnt be such a large step). I remain somewhat hopeful, but my eggs arent in that basket as I have what I need to function in my T5/Treo600 combo.

I thought the Linux OS was to get the Palm Software guys into the Asian smartphone market. I can't imagine Palm trying to support Treo in 3 OS versions....

Wont happen. When PalmLinux is ready, there will be at least a 6month wait (most likely a year wait) before seeing it in a device. That makes 2008 as the best bet. By that point Garnet and Cobalt will be firmly in pasture and WinMob8 will be readying release needing more resources than a Ford SUV on a 800 mile trip

    Default 700p could have Cobalt

I read an interesting thread somewhere (sorry, I don't remember where and I'm too lazy to go look everywhere again that raised a couple of good points:
    - It has only been a year (not quite) since Cobalt 1.1 for smarphones was released. This is really the first usable release
    - It supports EVDO
    - With Verizon getting an exclusive on the 700w for awhile, maybe the 700p with Cobalt, supporting EVDO will be announced for Sprint before the end of the year?

AFAIK, Palm is entirely a hardware company and the Palm OS is only tweaked by Palm any more but is developed and maintained by PalmSource which had split off from the original Palm Inc (God knows why) and has been purchased by Access of Japan. It frees up Palm to become MUCH bigger and do different things with it's successful products (like running Linux and now Window$) but I feel sad because the elegant and efficient "Palm OS" that we know and love wasn't keeping up--no multitasking etc--even though it has managed to stay true to the original specs: simple, dependable, quick, small and easy. WinCE etc are bloatware by comparision.

I think this article on Palm Linux Phones might be of interest to those following this thread.

Default I hope the 700p will become a reality.

Being a Mac user I have a strong aversion to anything Microsoft  (except Xbox ). I need to have Palm software for easy synching with my Mac. How can we convince Palm they need to have an option besides Windows CE for new generation stuff like the Treo700? Any new rumors?
