Sorry to butt in with my HTC WM5 device but i have DJ SMS COPIER and it works fine. It saves all folders in a single document that does not appear to be accessible by any program other than DJ. Access is invoked when you ask it to restore the backed-up files. I would like to examine the files in something like MS WORD but cant--its only the 21st century, gotta wait for tech evolution. I dont know where the program came from, I cant Google it, but there is an email address in the program for you to write and discuss your problems-- chehabsarl@google.com
I also have SMSExporter from www.seiz.ch on which site you can see the screen grabs of the program. THIS is the one i dont like, it seems to grab SMSes in helter-skelter fashion, never copying the set the same way twice in a row even though what you choose to back up is fully customizable. Please forgive me, i cant remember how many platforms they offer the program for but have a look. I rate it UNRELIABLE but you might have better luck.
Meantime I hope someone writes a solid program out of which the files can be exported to Excel, Word, whatever. I cannot imagine why there isnt such a program already, given the PLETHORA of cloned crap from one end of the market to the other.

I just checked my backups created with DJ SMS Copier and the individual messages are stored in an .xml format which opens in Internet Explorer for me. Once the file is open I can perform a File/Save As to .doc and the saved file then opens in Word. DJ saves them chronologically as it uses the date and time sent then the person sent to for titling each message so if you want to sort by person it becomes a bigger hassle. Still, it provides me a separate backup.

Retaining txt msgs is something I've been keen to do for a while so was keen to follow this thread.
I googled DJ-Sims-Copier and if you check out link below there are also other proggies listed which may work along the same lines - but will give DJ Sims Copier a go. The link below is for freeware but I note there are also payment required versions available.

I'm going to find a solution
I found this FAQ at http://www.tntsoft.com/index.php?smsexpindex ... a website for the publisher of a program called 'SMS Exporter'. Does anyone know if this statement accurate for WM5?
Q:How could I backup and restore all my SMS? A: You don't need any software to backup or restore the SMS database. Windows mobile save all SMS messages in the file of \Storage\cemail.vol. So to backup is just backup this file. Use File Explorer inside ActiveSync, normally you can not copy this file out because the file is used by the system or means locked, but you can rename it, rename cemail.vol to cemailback.vol and power off and power on the device, you can see now device create a new cemail.vol and cemailback.vol still exists. So cemail.vol is the empty template SMS database, and cemailback.vol is all your backup SMS. To restore just rename current cemail.vol, and replace with your backup database cemailback.vol to cemail.vol and power off/on. Please be noticed that this solution is not guarantee to work between two different device or OS version.

The text messages on a Treo 750 at least are saved in /Windows/PalmMsgV001
Restoring that file from a Sprite backup restored my text conversations anyway. It holds for WM5 and looks good for WM6 too.

Thanks mcuh Jim!
