It greyed out because your phone is not connected to active sync. Your phone needs to be hooked up to your active sync to fix your contact problem.
Once active sync goes through its regular syncing motions you should see "connected" in the box. With your phone still hooked up to active sync go to options>and highlight contact. As soon as you click the contacts button, your phone will start syncing again. It will then show your contacts being synced to your phone.
see if that works. If it doesnt then I will give you the only other way to trouble shoot the problem
