How to backup contacts if no Outlook on my PC?

Hi, I'm new to the forum & this is my first post. I hope someone can help me out!

When I bought my Treo 700w I went with the windows os instead of the palm os because I use a PC & I thought it'd be handy to be able to open word/excel documents on my treo. I guess I didn't think that through well enough though because I don't use Outlook (my calendar isn't complicated enough to need it, and I check email via the web) and when I try to sync my phone via the Windows Mobile Device Center on my laptop it tells me I *must* make Outlook my default mail program in order to sync.

Is there a way around this? I really cant afford to buy Outlook just so I can backup my contacts & calendar....
