Internet access speed lackluster
I'm 4 days into my new 700w and love it but am struggling with a few minor setup issues/constraints. I don't know for certain if I am in a 3G coverage area but I thought I was (Pittsburgh, PA) and the default setup on the phone connects to the Internet through IE (though I'm using Opera Mini now). When I connect to the web it dials *777 and then tells me that the "Broadband Access (Dial-Up)" connection is active. I just ran a speed test from DSL Reports folks and the 1 MB file gave me a rating of between 166-250 kb/sec or far below the quoted speed of 800-900 kb/sec for "broadband" speed.
Also, when I connect the icon will change from "EV" to "1X" and back and sometimes the arrows are solid white and other times they are grey - is the color change an indication of when the phone is sending or receiving? Is there something I can change, set, upgrade, research, etc. to find how to get a higher-speed access to the Internet? Is there a trick I'm unaware of?

What do others see for access speeds on the web? I'm at a disappointing 150-300 kb/sec rate on a 200kb, 600kb, or 1MB file and don't know how to get this up to the claimed 900 kb/sec rate. I'm using the DSL Reports' Mobile Speed Test for my benchmark so let me know what you get or what I can do to increase my speed.

Interesting Information
Thanks for the link. I'm definately new to this. Cobol programming, not a problem, but I need to learn more about the Treo and figure out how to run this site. I go to the link on my treo and try and do a 1M test and it says test in progress, your browser should jump to the resulets page when it's done. It doesn't jump. Sounds like a stupid question, but once you get to this page, do you just click on the 1M test and wait or is there a little more to the process.
I'm from Central Illinios, so EV is not an option. Your assumption is correct about the grayed out. It is supporse to reflect the area your in (EV or 1X), but grayed out means it is currently not sending/receiving data while white means it is sending/receiving.

Anything but 1M test comes back in reasonable time, in 1V, I'm at about 83ks-91ks.

Yeah - I was gonna say that the 1M test no longer works on my phone but all others so. When I try the 200kb or 600kb test I get not much higher than about 250 kb/sec. I thought that the EV network speed was supposed to be up to nearly DSL speed (or about 750-900 kb/sec). So is EV supposed to be three times the 1V network speed? If so then I'm three times the 1V speed (3 * 90 = 270) but I thought I had heard claims of much faster speeds. How about anyone in an EV network?

EV Speeds
From what I have found, you should be around 400-600kbps for EV, capable of reaching speeds of 1.8mbps. This is based on the information I found regarding EV speeds.

I average ~750kbs via Verizon on a 1mb file.

jsacks - where are you located and are you on the EVDO ("EV" on phone)? I get that and can't get any higher than about 250 kb. Is there any software/firmware upgrade or does your phone also dial *777 to access the web? I really wanted to buy my phone for the web/webmail feature and it is worse than a dial-up modem. It claims about 250 kb/sec speed rating on DSL Reports but it takes seemingly forever to load the Google page etc. I think I had faster service from my old LG VX8000 on the V*Cast downloads - and aren't those on the same EVDO bandwidth?

I am in NY, but these speeds are consistant anywhere I have an EV indicator. I don't have anything special with this phone, I would complain, you should be doing better than you see....
