Is it supposed to be slow?
Hello,
I just got a 700w off of the bay yesterday. It's a refurb in perfect condition. Everything seems to be functional on it but.. it just seems to run really slow.
I had been using a Q since last August and it was ok, but I missed being able to run regular PPC software on it. Now that I have the thing and I've set it up, it seems like I can't really run the software I want because the Treo is seriously lacking in CPU/memory. The 240x240 display is kind of a drag, too.
I've also been using a Dell Axim X51v since it was released, so I have a benchmark of what a "real" PPC can do. There are always going to be things (like GPS nav) that I'll only do on the Axim, but there are also things I wanted the phone to do, as well. This is my 6th device that runs some version of WinCE, the first being the very first Compaq "clamshell" running v1 of CE.
Basically I wanted to get these things running:
1. SBSH Pocketbreeze/Pocketweather
2. SPB Pocketplus
3. Opera
4. Netfront
5. A few other misc apps like Zagat's
I also use it to sync mail/contacts/calendar with our company's Exchange mail system and my personal email with Hotmail.
After getting it going, I've discovered:
1. I can't run Pocketweather. It literally brings the device to its knees.
2. Netfront runs so slowly as to not be usable. Too bad, because I prefer Netfront to Opera.
3. The messaging client gets laggy sometimes (delays in opening messages/menus).
I installed Tweaks2k2 and enabled the "optimal WM5 cache" and there does seem to be an improvement in overall system response, but now I only have 8M of RAM free.
So, my questions to the Treo 700w community are:
Are they all this slow?
If so, what do you all actually do with them?
Thanks!
John

The lack of memory in the 700w leads to the slow and lackluster performance. Hence, the 700wx that was released to Sprint and should be released to Verizon here in a week or so (the date of Feb 19 is floating around here).
If you can I would return it and wait for the 700wx to come out.

*anxiously waiting* Any idea if a new 700w customer with Verizon will be able to return it for a replacement/upgrade with the 700wx comes out and not have any "early-termination" fees associated? Has anyone done this with other carriers? I hope they would try and make a happy customer and wouldn't mind paying a nominal switching fee of say $50.

I think you may have a 14-day money back option.
