The Treo 700w/wx runs Windows Mobile and not Palm OS, so it doesn't use HotSync at all. So you can't use Palm Desktop if that's what you were referring to. You can install ActiveSync on your desktop to synchronize the calendar/contacts/tasks on your phone with Outlook on your computer.

I think that there are third party programs that let you synchronize with PIM's other than Outlook. Usually I think Windows Mobile devices come with an old copy of Outlook (XP/2002 I think), though you may not have gotten that if you bought it off of ebay.

To install programs on your Treo via Active Sync, you can go to Tools in ActiveSync, and I think there is a Add/Remove Programs item (I'm on Vista right now which doesn't use ActiveSync so somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

PIM just means personal information manager. Just something that handles calendars/contacts/tasks/emails/etc.

If the add/remove item is gray, either your Treo isn't connected or it is in the process of synchronizing I think. Try waiting until it has finished synchronizing and is still connected.

The easiest option for syncing might be to just get Outlook if you can. The only way I found, after searching for a few minutes, to desktop sync to something other than Outlook was Intellisync (http://usa.nokia.com/A4241113). I've not used it (and its not free), but it listed this:
Quote:
Supported groupware / PIM applications:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002/2003/2007
  • Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0/6.0
  • Lotus Notes 5.0/5.5/6.0/6.5/7.0/(8.0 beta)
  • Novell GroupWise 6.0, 6.5, 7.0
  • ACT! 6.0
  • Lotus Organizer 6.1
  • Palm Desktop 4.0/4.1/4.1.4E
  • ActiveSync 3.7.1, 3.8, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.5
