Possible solution to Activesync problem.
Hey folks,
I had the same problem with activesync as many others. When I put my Treo on the cradle, I would get a "connected" message but then it would fail to sync. After trying many differnt things. I finally ended up just going to the options tab on AS and DESELECTED the "files" check mark. For some reason AS doesnt like to sync files.

Funny that this same thing just started happening to me. I couldn't understand all of the problems that people were having. Then, I come home yesterday (just like any other), place my T700w in the cradle and I get connected, can browse the files on the device but cannot sync. I have even uninstalled AS 4.1 and updated to Beta 4.2 but no joy. I can say that one of the things I did at work that may have changed this was that I added a POP e-mail account to the phone. This was the 2nd e-mail account that was added. The first was a wireless sync account from work. That should be the only difference between when I left for work with a good sync, and came home, to a bad sync. Hard to say though. This is encouraging but, how then do you sync files???

I actually go inside of the active sync to "explore" and find a folder that I want to place a file into. Then I copy and paste a file into that folder. Here's a point of interest though. Through my troubleshooting I have found that this doesn't seem to be an active sync problem . It looks like it is a Windows Mobile 5 problem. My wife still uses a PPC and cradle to sync her info. When she syncs files everything syncs perfectly, including files.

Well, I'm about to go home and try and figure out what happened with mine. I'm sure that I'll go through all of the same steps that Skyking did but I'm anxious to get this fixed. The frustrating thing is that it was working for several weeks before it decided to stop. It may be related to some media files that I synchronized using Windows Media Player. That would seem silly to have caused this but aside from the POP account I mentioned above, it's the only other thing I can think of that may have changed the config.
I'll post a new reply when I'm done tonight. I may even call Verizon to help. They were very responsive last time I called.
Oh and I'll add that I was able to sync files for the weeks that it was working. I didn't use the file sync much but it was working.

something new from another forum.
If you are having problems syncing with the new Treo, try the following:
1. Check whether you have tons of 0 length files in \Windows\Temp
2. Delete them
3. Try to sync again using ActiveSync
Treo creates tons of these 0 length files for no good reason.
That would explain why some people don't experience this on other phones but the Treo.
Due to massive number of files, this affects ActiveSync to timeout.
I had 2770 0 length files.
I deleted them and we are back up and running. I was also able to go back into AS options and re-select files and it works just fine.

I may have fixed mine.....for now
OK so here's what worked for me. This may be temporary but I'm optimistic.
I did not have any 0 length files as Skyking stated previously but something he posted earlier led me to my answer. I do synchronize Files using AS so I think mine was actually File Sync related. When I get the error "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully", I can navigate through the device's files but not synchronize. Also, I am unable to delete the relationship or change any of the options. So here's what I did:
- Perform Sprite backup from PC or PDA then transfer using Explorer
- Uninstalled Active Sync 4.2 Beta (ya I know) from computer (left it running on device)
- Renamed "\My Documents\Treo 700w My Documents" on computer (only appears if you choose to sync files in AS)
- Completely deleted "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync" folder from Computer
- Reinstalled AS 4.2 Beta
- During the setup, selected Calendar only (could really be any except Files)
- Then after the initial calendar sync, added the selection of syncing Files
NOTE: I do not sync mail using AS. I sync mail, tasks and notes using Wireless Sync. This is because if I try to WS my calendar, ClientShell.exe (WirelessSync) will crash on the PDA. Verizon has been unable to resolve this.
Anyhow, after I did the initial calendar sync, then added files and synced again, no problems. Did not have to soft or hard reset or even restart XP. Hope this helps and as always, perform a Sprite Backup first.

DOH!!!
Came home today, one day after fixing my Active Sync (see previous post) and same problem. I'm going to do the same thing I did before but leave File Sync option out of it to see if this makes a difference.

OK I agree, Active Sync officially Sucks
So I called Verizon and let them know that I was having the same problem that every other heavy AS user was having. First thing she says is Hard Reset. I was shocked but was left with no other options. So I backed up using Sprite Backup, did the hard reset and of course AS started working again. So, I got a case number from her and hung up. I then reinstalled Sprite, restored my data and, not surprisingly, AS came back with the same problem. What a crock
. This would point to something on the phone that is having the problem though.
I'm not sure what to do now since, WS won't sync my calendar and AS won't sync anything.
Just an FYI though, the Sprite backup does indeed backup EVERYTHING on the Treo, your alert settings, ring tone settings, speed dial numbers...the whole chibang! Impressive.
