I, too, encountered this problem. For me, the problem was that I had several applications running, so I guess there was insufficient memory to permit a restart (wake up). This is an inconvenience, as I take several flights every week.
For me, all I do is shut down (close) all applications at the same time, I turn on flight mode. If I use the applications during flight, I then make sure that all applications arfe shut down (closed).
I close the applications by holding the 'OK' button for a couple of seconds. This brings up the running program list. Here you can close any or all running applications. I know that some folks use the freeware program 'Magic Button' as it simplifies the process.
I power up by pressing and holding the key with the red phone on it.
BYW: Rather than remove and replace the battery, you might just try a soft reset by pressing the reset button with the stylus.
I hope this information is helpful to you and others.
