Default Random crashes and reboots on the 700w

I realize this device hasn't been in your hands very long yet, but what's the verdict so far on the stability on the 700w?

Problems with random crashes and reboots have kept me from getting on the 650 bandwagon despite my desire to own a smartphone.

Is the new one more stable than the 650?

Thanks

The think has been rock solid. It locked up once on what was probably a poorly coded website. Other than that, it hasn't given me a problem.

Thanks, Chris. Have you installed any external apps yet? I recall third-party software was often blamed for the instability of the 650.

Not yet, but I'm working on it. I'm in a unique situation being a Mac user. I spent most of the day yesterday installing Virtual PC and Windows XP Professional. Still, I couldn't get Virtual PC to acknowledge the Treo 700w. I'm going to try some workarounds today to get installations working. A friend of mine has an old PC he's not using and I'll be using that for the meantime.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the stability of the OS - at this point.

Yeah, I do realize the irony in going with a Windows-based device for its stability.

True. So true.

It does have those quirky dialog boxes that are seemingly unneccessary. While browsing the web for a phone #, I clicked on the link to dial. I received some message - I don't recall the exact wording, but it was a warning. If I click OK and proceed, dialing this phone number could mean my Treo 700w will go up in flames.

In the end, I dialed and had no problems whatsoever.

That's good to hear. I can (probably) live with a few dialog boxes.

have to agree that the 700w is rock solid...very impressive in it's default state. Didn't crash once for the past five days.

THat all said...it is not ready for 3rd party programs. or rather, 3rd party programs are not ready for this device. i loaded some basics like Resco File Explorer, some SPB progs, etc and they slow down/lock up the 700. I would stay with the default setup for another few weeks till programs come out that are made with the 700 in mind.

With regard to 3d party apps, I was also wondering if the 700w's unique 240x240 screen will make it more difficult to run apps. Though from what you say, it sounds like the display will not be the only problem when it comes to running external programs.

I've put my standard programs on like Pocket Informant, Pocket Bible, etc... The current versions which have code to support Windows Mobile 5 seem to be running fine.
