remove speed dials from today screen

I have several speed dials that I want to setup. Before I had the treo I had a phone from verizon and I memorized speed dials 1-9. Now I can have numbers and letters and that is great. However when I setup several of them they fill up the screen on the today menu. Is there a way to have speed dials but not show them on the screen at all. I am going to put them in the same order that I had before and I don't want to have to see them on the screen. Thanks,

menu - preferences - todays setting - items - uncheck the speed dial
