Send txt msg to email address w/o data plan

I have the 700W but have disabled data since I can't justify the monthly expense. On my old cell phone I used to be able to send a text message to an email address, but now when I try, I get an error message. I read in another forum that the only way I can do this on a Treo is to enable data (and therefore add $40 to my monthly plan) and send the message from my personal email account. Is this true and if so, what are my alternatives?

ETA: Nevermind, I figured it out. TO address is 6245 (spells MAIL on a regular phone). In the body of your message enter the email address you want to send a text to, followed by a space, and then your actual message. I sent two texts to my hotmail and gmail account and they both arrived from username@vtext.com.
