Default SIMPLE question about data

Can you recieve phone calls when the #777 is dialed?
or will they go straight to my voicemail?

depends on which coverage you're in...if it says "1x" next to it, you'll miss calls when the arrows are solid white...if you're in evdo coverage ("EV"), then you (theoretically) won't miss any calls.

IF you're in a 1x coverage area, yes. This is actually documented in the user manual. Seems like bad planning to me, but I'm rarely outside an EVDO area. If I'm in a 1x area for an extended period of time, I just have my AS settings to check the server every hour. This definitely helps minimize the amount of time it's actively communicating (i.e. - missing calls).

Ok, what do you see above the arrows when you're connected? If it says EV, you're in EVDO coverage (i.e. - high speed). If you see 1X above the arrows, you're in National Access coverage. If you're in National Access coverage, when the arrows are solid, you can't receive a call.

I use an Exchange Server to synchronize my Microsoft Outlook with my Treo. This uses a good deal of network activity...which is why I set my Treo to sync every hour when I'm in National Access coverage.

AS = Active Sync

Hope this helps

I have NEVER seen an EV over that area... and that bothers me... I would have thought they would tell me if I was not in an evdo area.... is that Y I have to dial eachand every time??!?! that whole #777 thing?

it'll actually dial 777 if you're in an EVDO area as well...that's just how it connects to the data network.

the good news is that National Access is still pretty fast...that's what my coverage is when I go back to Wisconsin to visit family, and I'd say that unless i'm doing something very network intensive (like downloading a HUGE attachment), there's not that big of a difference.

Default Treo Teathering

I am thinking about buying a Treo 700w, I am aware of the beta stage of the ability to teather to a laptop, however I am wondering if anyone can offer me an answer to my question.

I have a Motorola V710 right now, and while connected to my Mac via bluetooth, i can dial #777 and connect via 1x to the internet on my Mac. My phone does not support EVDO, however, I never get charged for connecting this way, it is faster than 11kbps, and I am wondering If this will be possible to do via a Treo, possibly by forcing it into a 1x mode instead of EVDO? I know I can just dial my ISP, but that would be at 11kbps speed, slugish!
