Sound Distortion/Malfunction on Treo 700w

Hello, I am having a problem with my Treo 700w phone, whenever I have a headset plugged in, the sound comes through distorted and quiet.

Originally I thought that the problem was my headset (was using the single one that came with it), but I recently bought a double ear bud headset and sound only comes through one side, and it comes out distorted. Anyway to make it work with both sides? Maybe it'll sound better?

The sound is fine directly through the phone speaker, but the headset is really shotty.

Edit: After fiddling around with it for awhile, I realized that not putting the plug all the way in makes the sound appear on the side that originally didn't have any sound, and it's clear, but you can't make it very loud, and the other side stopped. At another depth into the phone the side that originally works and was distorted works, but is also quiet. They never both work, and it's never clear and at a good volume.
