It is specifically forbidden in the terms of use to connect a PC (or any other device) to your phone/pda and obtain network usage.

The problem is that your PC will use ALOT more data/bandwidth than your PDA will, so that's why they do it.

Personall, I do it, and I only do it a couple of times a month. So, it's not that big of a deal, and I don't lose any sleep over it because I'm not using more than they intended me to. However, I can see how this could be a big problem for them if everyone did it. You are technically supposed to purchase a data card (PCMCIA) for your laptop to use it, and that costs an additional monthly fee.

I'm already using this software, but its tethered to my computer via USB. Although I'm use to 8mbps downloads, it works pretty well. I run alot of websites and need to be able to manage them via a computer and not my PDA. IMO verizon will have to take one for the team in my case. It sucks when such a big company is so damn greedy. The service isn't cheap, and then they try and regulate how I use it. BAH! Well thats a whole other story.

Anyway it works. The speeds aren't what I expected, but are definately good enough.

When you say they redline your account, does that mean you get a letter of warning or do they limit the amount of traffic you can have each month?

I was told by a Verizon Store Manager today that he had a customer come in that was doing this on older phones. He used it every day for a couple of months.

The cancelled his service, and therefore held his number. They made him pay the $175 cancellation fee, and would not reactivate service without a $500 deposit.

Now, I'm not saying this is true, I'm just saying that the store manager told me this, not my sister's husband's next door neighbor's dog's best friend.

This article might give a little more insight to this issue:

Here's Verizon's TOS for the Unlimited PDA/Smartphone plans. If you ask me, I would think a lawyer could poke holes in this all over the place...1) they are marketing it as 'unlimited' 2) in the TOS, (1) permits usage thgough the devices native applications..since windows media player is a native application to the device, it would natively support media streaming - which is then prohibited in #3....3) they prohibit use with 'server devices or with host computer applications', correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't a web server fall into this category? If that's true, then web browsing would be prohibited...4) make sure someone doesn't email you an mp3, because that as well would be a violation of the TOS

Ok...that being said, I'm not going to get worked up over it unless I encounter a problem. I just noticed that stuff and thought I'd see what other people had to say about it....

    TOS:

Unlimited PDA/Smartphone and BlackBerryr Plans: These VZEmail plans cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets or other data networks except as the device’s native applications & capabilities permit unless you subscribe to the Tethering Feature; (2) for any applications that tether your device to laptops, personal computers other than for use of the Wireless Sync or BlackBerry Solutions, unless you subscribe to the Tethering Feature; (3) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games unless offered through Get It Now or V CAST; (4) with server devices or with host computer applications, including without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions or any other machine-to-machine application; or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, and/or (5) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. VZEmail service is for individual use only and is not for resale. We reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, deny or terminate data services, without notice, for anyone we believe is using the VZEmail service in any manner prohibited above, whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels or whose usage exceeds reasonable levels.

Good info. I think Verizon is going to have to deal with this soon - hopefully in a way that doesn't infuriate its customers. For me, it's currently a non-issue since my home area is still on the @$$#%#% 1xrtt "National Access" data speed. I can't even get EV-DO!
