Question trying to find GPS software that doesn't require a receiver

When I had my Chocolate phone, I had GPS software that I downloaded from the 'Get it now' feature. This software used airtime in order to navigate. With my 700w I would like the same feature. All I can seem to find out there is GPS software that requires GPS receivers in order to work.

Is there any GPS software (Windows mobile 5) out there that connects to the internet and uses airtime instead of me needing a GPS receiver?

I have come across the Palm OS versions, but no versions for Windows Mobile 5.

Surely I'm not looking in the right place....?

I think you'll need a receiver in order for this work. I don't believe there is software that would be able to accomplish what you're looking to do without an external GPS receiver.

All phones are, basically, little computers. They will not do anything they are not programmed or hardwired to do. Some phones carry recvrs, built in, to utilize GPS signals. YOU MUST HAVE A RECEIVER TO USE GPS. You can not download software to turn a radio into a TV, so to speak.

What GPS receiver would you recommend for the 700WX?

Also what gps program do you use from there?

I use a 700W, so can not speak directly to your WX application but I have had perefectly good service from a US GlobalSat BT-338 Bluetooth Rcvr.

http://www.usglobalsat.com/category.asp?catid=12

I picked it up as a pack with iGuidance software for 170$ and have been satisfied with its performance. As a stand alone recvr it will interface with any software acceptng industry standard data streams.

There will be quirks - you can only use a bluetoooth comm device one at a time; no gps and headset and music and whateverelse you are trying to force the poor thing to do. You need to remember that these phones are very poor at multitasking - they are not desktop computers - they are not designed to run 4 applications at once, no matter what the sales rep tells you.

So much for the soap box.

My gps works great - I use iGuidance in the car, I use GpsDash2 (I dont think this is supported any longer and it is starting to have problems although Handango, etc are still selling it) in the car (not at the same time as iGuide.) and when I run or bike, I use Googlemaps also.

Do these GPS programs require airtime? Also are they able to give point by point instructions on where to go? I don't have the internet package on my phone so that is why I am asking.

I think what the OP was talking about was the ability of many modern phones (e.g., treo 650) to trasmit your location when you call, for example 911. I don't know how that works, but it does.

I think the OP was asking, is there a hack to allow GPS software to run utilizing the location facilities that many cell phones already use when calling 911.

So, is there a hack that would allow a 650 to act as a GPS receiver, without additional harware, but using the built in cell phone location feature.

not that I am aware of. Boadcasting and receiving are two entirelyu differant functions - electronically and physically.

None of them require any air time as it is a fuction seperate from the phones service provider; your phone is not acting as a phone when it is acting as GPS - you are taking advantage of what is effectively a free Govt supplied service.

iGuideance provides voice prompts if you wish to turn them on; Dash2 is just a data display and logging software (but it will export to Goggle Earth); Goggle Maps is only a mapping display.

You need to do a little searching and reading on these boards about GPS software - none of it is perfect and if you ask three people their opinion of a particular software you are likely to get 4 or 5 differant answers.
