Default Using MP3's for Ringtones

I truly like the 700w, with the exception of the user's guide.

I want to know if there is a way to set the ringer to an mp3 you have on the expansion card. I would think that it would be easy to do, but haven't been able to figure it out.

I am not sure if you can use mp3 songs as ringtones that are stored on your SD card. I have a mp3 editing program called "mpTrim". Do a google search for more detailed information. Its free. I use it to chop my mp3s down into whatever length I want for my ringtones. I just sync'd up my phone with my comp and saved them to my phone instead of my SD card. It saves on memory when I use mpTrim.

Sounds good. I can do the editing of the mp3, but is there a specific folder for it to go in to find it?

Default Yes you can.

Ive been able to use MP3s on my card as ringtones. You just have to go to the "Manage Ringtones" tab under Alerts and Notifications and choose Add New. You add it to the list of ringtones and then go back to Alerts and Notifications for whatever the alert is (Known Caller, New Email, etc) and choose the MP3 from the list.

Took me awhile to figure out that you had to 'add' it to your tones under the Manage tab. Hope this helps.

Default Hows Does it Affect Performance?

NP!

Does anyone know how this affects performance or storage? Most traditional ringtones are a few Kb in size....but the Treo gives you the ability to use MP3s. Of course, MP3s can run upwards of 5MB - does this cause issues when you start using more and more custom MP3 ringtones vs the standard ringtones?

Ok, I'm a little worried/confused with your statement that MP3s can run UPWARD of 5MB...
I just checked and most of my Pink Floyd tracks run between 10mb and 20mb! it looks like they average 11 meg for 5 minutes worth of music... I'm using the Real Player software that came with the phone... OK, it IS just a 650 and I am just gathering info over here to guide a possible upgrade to either the 700w or 700p (I'm on Sprint).

To tell the truth, I was surprised when I could only get 3 to 4 cd's on a 512mb SD card!

Any thoughts?

It depends what bitrate the files are in. The higher the bit rate, the bigger the file.

Default Instrumentals & MP3 Trim

I tend not to use the whole file, I use a program called MP3 Trim to trim down instrumentals I have, so I only have the clip of the song I need. Usually the chorus is what I choose. my files are usually 300-500kb and I store them on my SD card, which never comes out of my 700w.

You should check and see what bitrate your files are encoded at. The higher the bitrate the more space it'll take up.

Here is a Link to a Cool mp3 tool that tells you how many days, hours, minutes, seconds, and albums you can fit on any size media you specify.

For instance, with your 512mb SD card you should be able to do the following:

MP3's recorded @ 128kbps
0 days, 9 hours, 19 minutes, 14 seconds
(559 minutes total)
12 albums (at an estimated 45 minutes per album)

MP3's recorded @ 160kbps
0 days, 7 hours, 27 minutes, 23 seconds
(447 minutes total)
9 albums (at an estimated 45 minutes per album)

MP3's recorded @ 192kbps
0 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, 49 seconds
(372 minutes total)
8 albums (at an estimated 45 minutes per album)

All the bitrates above are CD quality so you shouldn't see a lost in audio quality, if so it should be minor.

I currently have a 512mb SD card in my 700w with about 30 songs and it takes up about 135 megs. All songs are @ various bitrates and lengths. Hope that helps.

I'm in GA as well BTW, actually in Marietta @ the moment.
