Default Wireless sync does not auto-disconnect

First real post to the forum here so I don't know if this is a feature or bug and tried doing a quick search for it first. Luckily, I signed up for the "unlimited data access" option so it isn't so much of an issue as if I had to pay per kB. Anyway, when my brand new phone (700w) does its wireless sync for email every (set at every 15 minutes for now) it retrieves the email in less than 1-2 minutes but then stays connected as displayed by the icon in the toolbar. 10 minutes later I click on that and it shows that I'm still connected and I can Disconnect or Hide the window.

Is there an option or setting that would have the phone disconnect after it finishes sync'ing with the wireless connection? Is there really any harm in having the phone stay connected all the time with an "unlimited data access" service other than an extra drain on the battery?

This is my first smartphone which replaced an LG VX8000 and before that the fantastic Motorola StarTac. I've done some research but am finding a ton of things that were not always covered in those reviews (which is both good and bad right now) but am more pleased so far than anything.

Welcome to ET Darren. I think that you have to manually disconnect everytime at the end of your session or you stay connected. And with windows mobiole the X does not close a program unless you have a third party app that enablews the X to work like windows xp.

It may be a significant drain on your power but if you stay hooked up to the charger it is not going to be a problem. Unless you have some security enabled you might get unwanted visitors if yoiu stay connected all the time.

I saw another post about Magic Button (and vBar) so I looked into those which helps so thanks to everyone on here. Disconnecting manually is a pita when the default is set to sync every 15 minutes -- maybe I'll just sync manually when I need to get new email and then disconnect manually a minute later. And I was just thinking about the issue of no anti-virus program, no firewall, no pop-up blocker, etc. for the Internet accessing and will keep researching the forums for that as well. I registered the Treo and have the same "alternate" email listed on the 700w so if I start getting lots of spam and junk to that account then I'll know why but I thought ahead this time.

I found another thread on the Internet security topic and proceeded to download Opera Mini which has not only Security but also Tabbed browsing and Pop-Up window capabilities. One of my work pages has an initial pop-up that I could never see because IE does not show it. I had previously installed Mozilla's Minimo but it took so long to load even the initial Google search page that I ended up removing that from the phone.

I have discovered that using the "ReadySync Enabled" link instead of "Push Enabled" option gets the phone to disconnect after dialing to download email. Is this what others see as well? I still do not have the option to "Disconnect modem after ..." as it is grayed out but when I had the "Push Enabled" as the wireless sync option the phone would stay connected up to 48 minutes and more beyond the first connection but with the "ReadySync Enabled" the phone connects for 2 minutes and then disconnects for the next 20 minutes (my setting is to sync every 20 minutes). I'm finally at east about this - whew.
