I am using a Cingular/ATT Treo 750 running the official ATT WM6 update.
Have any ideas what may be causing this?
Hey found a way to make this work on AT&T branded 750's. After you download the trueluck's cingualr wizard, unzip the file and open the folder that is unzipped (wizard-CNG). Look for a file called "payloads.xml". Right click the file and select edit. A window will open up and allow you to make changes. Near the top you will see a line with the letters CNG in it. Delete the three letters (CNG) and replace it with ATT and save the file in the same folder. follow the instructions as stated in prevois posts and you will now have your ATT 750 with the unbranded WM6 (no ATT bloatware). Worked great for me.

SWEET! Thanks DHZ! I was wondering where that might have been.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I've been reading thru this thread and I've come across several words that I'm not familiar with in regards to the Treo "lingo" of services. They are ICS and tethering... Can someone explain those terms so I can see how they apply to my Treo?
I am a Cingular user and I am running a Treo750 WM5 that I upgraded to last April 2007. I pay $39.99 for my unlimited data plan in addition to the regular family plan charges for phone use. I've set up my phone to connect to my laptop and have been able to surf the web via the Treo as the modem. The odd thing is that I can only connect via bluetooth and not via a USB cable connecting the Treo to the laptop (although, I didn't have Activesync installed, I think??). Anyway, my total Cingular phone statement is the same amount every month, so I am not charged for using the Treo as a laptop modem. I read a post from someone that they need to pay an extra fee to do this. Is this fee based on the data plan's price they have or a new pricing feature that AT&T has created to bleed us for more cash.
Also, how does upgrading to official vs. unbranded WM6 affect the ability to use the Treo as a modem (for free in my case).

Here's the skinny.
WM6 replaces the DUN (dial up networking) used in WM5 with a much simpler ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). With ICS, you just plug in your USB cable, open Internet Sharing on the Treo and click connect. Your PC will recognize the treo as a network device and voila! You're surfing the web. This is called "tethering" since your PC is tied or tethered to your phone.
According to the download page at Palm for the ATT WM6 ROM, to use Internet Sharing and tether, ATT requires a "tether" data plan, which costs $15 to $20 more per month than the standard $39 unlimited data plan. The assumption is that the ATT ROM contains a feature which could block Internet Sharing if you're not on the right plan. The Unbranded ROM would not be subject to those limitations and should always work with a standard plan.
From what other's who have upgraded to the ATT version have said, ATT has not yet started enforcing it as they can still tether on the standard plan. Could happen anytime.
ATT is also watching users to see who may be tethering without a tether plan. I've heard they are flagging any account going over 5GB per month. I only tether occasionally as I have DSL for regular internet use, so I expect no problems.

Thank you for your help fastlerner.
I would just like to ask since i do a lot of travelling. . .
Can I connect to other 3g networks outside of AT&T and still enjoy using my laptop to access the web via tethering to the treo 750?
thanks again fastlerner

Thanks, Fastlerner!!
I was just rereading thru this thread before I go ahead with the update.
In regards to AT&T (Cingular) dumping WindowsLIVE and WindowsLIVE being available for use on the unbranded update.... Does this have any effect or consequences to my Cingular contract should I ever need technical support from them and I'm using an unbranded version of WM6??
I don't thin I even use Windows Live or Xpress Mail. I've always just set up my email address setups manually on the Treo and any text messaging that I do, I use the messaging program that is listed when you click the windows button and it shows up on the drop down menu - not really sure if that is linked to any specific messaging program or just the generic Windows or Cingular Text Messaging software.
