Might want to check on the "no roaming charges" on your plan.
Maybe it was just my situation at the time, but I was travelling on business to Las Vegas and I had to turn on the World Connect feature so I can receive and send calls to and from my associates that were travelling to the US from London. When I was on the phone with the Cingular Rep to turn it on, they specifically made a point to tell me to make sure I check that my phone said ATT so that I was using an ATT tower. If it said something other than ATT they said, if possible, to move a short distance until ATT appears to avoid roaming charges.
Then again, that was when it was Cingular just starting to transition over to ATT. Boy, do I miss Cingular!

""ATT requires a "tether" data plan, which costs $15 to $20 more per month than the standard $39 unlimited data plan"".
""From what other's who have upgraded to the ATT version have said, ATT has not yet started enforcing it as they can still tether on the standard plan. Could happen anytime"".
I am a little confused, I was under the impression that with the new AT&T 2.25 version the basic unlimited data plan for AT&T was $19.95 and that plan would not allow tethering (only on version 2.25). I thought the $39.95 plan was for "laptop connect" (or whatever they call it). And I assumed that blocking tethering on the basic plan was happening now, not something in the future.
I don't have any data plan at all, so I cannot verify any of this.......
Can anybody actually verify all of this???
Thanks, Kirk

My contract for my Treo was signed when it was still Cingular and my $39.99 data plan includes the DUN for free and basically all the features for a smartphone. Basically everything is "unlimited" except for free 1000 text messages a month. After the 1st thousand, you pay per msg. I think I've done about 30 text msges since I got the Treo last April of 2007. I made sure I asked about everything possible chargeable feature that I could think of at the time of purchase so in the past almost a year of use, I've only had to pay extra when I enable the World Connect feature when I travel overseas.
I looked at the current ATT pricing plans today and there wasn't even anything that looked like my plan or was priced at $39.99.
Did I mention that I really hate ATT..??...!!! I originally moved to Cingular after being a longtime ATT customer because they started signing me up for services without my approval and sending me letters in the mail confirming my new service (ie. personal 800 numbers).
Either way, I'm still locked up to $39.99 for another 1.5 years until the contract is up.
I don't know what the ATT sales pitch is these days with smartphone charges, but I recently saw a story on 20/20 or some show like that about a guy who switched from a blackberry to an iphone and ended up getting a monthly bill for I think $6000-$7000. His story being on TV ended up embarrassing ATT and they didn't make him pay the outrageous fees. Turned out that he travelled frequently and he was being charged for EVERYTHING that he wasn't previously charged on his old smartphone.
The really screwed up thing about that story was that yes, he was pissed about a $6000 monthly phone bill. He was more used to paying ONLY $2000 a month normally!!!
What would you have to do to get a bill that high on a monthly basis???
What's the most expensive data plan - like $89.00 or something??? maybe $150 if ATT really takes you for a ride....
Trueluck posted that he runs his Treo hard and he was paying $20/month for data.

Just looked at the plans on the ATT site. One thing to keep in mind, the first thing it asks you to do is put in your zip code before it shows the plans, so they may be priced differently depending on your home city.
Looks like they've changed it VERY recently. I don't see the plan I'm on listed. Anyway, they list 2 data plans that would applicable to the Treo.
PDA Personal = $35 month
Included Data Unlimited
Additional data $0/KB
Canadian Data $0.015/KB
International Data $0.02/KB
PDA Personal + Tethering = $65 monthly
Included Data 5000 MB
Additional data $0/KB
Canadian Data $0.015/KB
International Data $0.02/KB
So, while the unlimited plan went down 5 bucks, the tether plan went up 5 bucks. Also note that the tether plan DOES place a cap on total monthly data of 5 GB, so it's not unlimited.
These prices are strictly for the data side. You still have to buy a voice plan first.
Again, I still have no idea when they will lock down the ability to tether to only those with a tether plan, but it's a good bet that it won't be long.
Oh yeah, "Laptop Connect" is a totally different beast. That plan is for a wireless data card that you slot in your laptop, not for PDA phones.

I wonder how that's going to affect people like me who bought the treo under the Cingular banner just before it switched over to ATT...
I'm still locked into my plan for a year and a half and then after that is up, I can downgrade my monthly if I want or keep the current $39.99 plan. Right now, according to the contract that I signed, I have unlimited use of the Treo as a laptop modem. so theoretically, if I just maintain the $39.99 after the 2 years are up, I should still have unlimited use until I change the plan.
I've been such a long Cingular customer that the Cingular plans have changes several times and I would just keep renewing my contract when my wife and I would upgrade our phones (or more specifically, forced to upgrade our phones just about every 2 years). Our basic family plan still has us under the payment plan and features when Cingular was real new and was literally giving away minutes and features for free or practically free. I know they get pissed whenever we upgraded our phones and had to lock us in for 2 years and I told them that I am just extending the contract instead of signing a new contract with the current payment plans.

That makes sense. If the folks you needed to call were traveling here from London (therefore having London phone numbers), then you would have had to dial an international number to call them which would require the World Connect feature. Even though you have "free roaming", you would still incur roaming charges if making an international call through another carrier.

Sure. You just have to load the network settings for whatever carrier's SIM you are using. Do a google for "treo 680 network settings <Carrier>" and you'll probably find a forum post somewhere for someone who has already figured it out.

I finally found the Cingular TREO 750 WM5 ROM and downloaded it.
Here's the post with the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/arch.../t-320748.html
I posted on XDA yesterday after jfa's post here and I got a reply regarding reverting down to WM5 and possible problems with version numbers and other software that refers to it during installation. Can you guys give it a quick read and post any thoughts?
QUOTE:
A word to the wise, if you want to be able to go back to WM5 AND install things like the factory audio patch or anything else that checks the version number, USE THE SD CARD METHOD to install WM6 and NOT the desktop method.
The reason for this is a desktop installer doesn't exist for WM5, and you will have to revert using the SD card method, which does not update the software version. So if you go to WM6 your versions jumps to 2.25 or such, and if you revert, you have WM5 v1.13 (with its audio bug, etc), but the software still says version 2.25 to any sw/patch loading program that cares.
I have never heard of a way to revert the version number back to the original 1.13. Perhaps the device reset software from the PALM web site (http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...vicereset.html) will do it, but that is complete speculation.
END QUOTE
I'll also post the instructions that came with the WM5 ROM download. Some people were having trouble with the WM5 install, but someone posted that STEP 1 wasn't needed. I don't know enough about these files to figure out what STEP 1 actually does and why it isn't needed.
STEP 2 looks like it's just like TrueLuck's original SD card method with the same characteristic of not changing the version number.
I bet Trueluck could've made the WM5 ROM into a Desktop Wizard that would fix the version issue like he did with WM6!!!
Long Live TrueLuck wherever he is...
Again, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
