Me again... Can't do my upgrade til I get home, so I'm just reading thru other WM6 posts.
Just noticed that the Official ATT upgrades to 2.25 and the unbranded version is 2.23. Is there any difference between the 2 or does the version number difference just designate that one file is for unbranded and the other is for branded upgrades but feature-wise and bloat-wise they are identical?
-
Feature wise they are ALMOST identical. ATT version has the ability to lock ICS without a tether data plan, is loaded with ATT bloatware, and doesn't have all the Windows Live features.
Other than that, they are the same.
I'm guessing the ATT release has a later version number simply because it was released later and is a different build.

HELP - Installing Now - Is it stuck??
I'm installing it now using the SD card method.
It's taken 9 minutes to run thru the list of items on the screen that it updates and the message on the bottom of the screen says, "Update Complete. UPDATE SUCCESS".
It's been 5 minutes now and the Treo hasn't initialized itself.
Am I supposed to do something to initialize it or is it supposed to do it itself and how long does that take to do it on it's own?
I don't want to touch anything for fear of bricking.

link please.
hi,
i have a treo 750 (att branded) unlocked using on Suncom here in TN. I updated my treo to att version of wm6 2.25, but I would like the official unbranded one instead because Im not even with ATT and would like to have it. please send me a link to sdsbama@gmail.com. oh yeah would i have to downgrade to wm5 to go to wm6 2.23?
thanks!

So far WM6 is running great.
Do you still need to install the Aduio Patch and the DST patch?
EDIT:
Yes to DST Patch
No to the Audio patch - only needed for version 1.13

Just sent you the info. The wizard method MAY not work due to the software version already on your Treo. If this is the case, give the SD/bootloader method a shot as I suspect it may not check the software version.
Either way, let us know how it goes. I'm curious if you can load this ROM on an already upgraded device.

Didn't trueluck try the official over his unbranded install to test it out and then go back to his unbranded? Maybe he didn't use the wizard to reinstall over the official version.
When doing the SD card method, just know that you need to do a soft reset when the screen says "Upgrade Complete - Upgrade Success" for te Treo to initalize and reboot into WM6.
That's what I had to do. The instructions posted here didn't mention that you had to do the reset youself. I thought the Treo did it on it's own. I just got a little nervous that I might have bricked my Treo since none of the buttons worked when it's in that installation screen.

Trueluck was probably using SD method. That IS what this thread initially started as after all.
I also remember him saying that he had to go FIND an XP machine to test when he was modifying the wizards, so it's a good bet he used SD.
-
Yeah. get this... I used the SD method specifically so that my software version number text won't change in the About screen. In post #180, I quoted someone from XDA mentioning that not installing the ATT official version and installing an unbranded version may cause problems if
1. I need to go back to WM5 - The WM5 ROM I found only works via the SD card method.
2. install programs that check on that software version before installation.
3. Not getting lectured by Cingular/ATT if I ever needed to talk to them about a tech issue and having to give them my version number.
I just wanted a backup to get WM5 back on if I screwed up the WM6 install. I'm pretty pleased with WM6 so far. I've even got a video program to work that didn't on WM5 - Coreplayer Mobile 1.1.3 for the PPC. It plays tons of video file types. I mostly use AVI files because I can use PocketDivXEncoder (Freeware) to reduce the filesize down to a fraction of the original size to fit more on an SD card.
I think that I should be able to still install the CNG Unbranded version using the Wizard so that the version numbers are correct.
Configuring WM6 was so smooth (specifically activesync via BT) that I'm not worried at all about not having my TREO up and working because of setup issues like I had with WM5.

Recap on upgrading with the Unbranded WM6 ROM
Okay, I realize this thread is getting long in the tooth and folks new to it typically jump to the last few pages.
So, as I keep getting the same questions over and over (from the thread, PM, and email) I thought I'd hijack the thread, put it back on it's original track, and post a recap that covers most of what people are asking. (This is the same thing I'm now sending in the email I send with the download links.)
-------------------------------------------------
GENERAL NOTES
The original unbranded installer from Palm was a single executable. The wizards here were created by extracting the files from Palm’s executable and the ROMs contained in the files below have not been modified in any way. I am NOT the originator and take no responsibility for anything you do to your device.
The wizards must be run from a Microsoft machine running the latest Activesync. You will need to use the bootloader/SD method if you’re a Mac user.
If you have already loaded the “branded” WM6 update, the wizard may not work. If this is the case, try the SD/bootloader method.
When updating by SD card/bootloader method, the software version shown in the about screen WILL NOT change. If this is an issue for you, find an XP machine and use the wizard. I have also heard of a method for rolling back to WM5 on the XDA developers site which requires that the software version reflected in the about screen still show the old WM5 version numbers to work. I don’t know why anyone would want to go back, but if you think you’re one of those people, use the SD method.
INSTALL WIZARDS
The wizards are customized to install on either Cingular or ATT branded devices. If you’re not sure what your branding is, check in “settings/system/about/phone” and you should see letters after your software version. (ex: Software version TREO750-2.23-CNG)
If your branding is different for some reason, you can customize one of these wizards to work for you. After downloading and extracting the ZIP, open “payloads.xml” in an editor. (Notepad works fine.) Near the top you will see a tag labeled “carrier codes”. Change the text to match the letters after your software version. That’s the only real difference between the wizards.
Make sure the latest version of ActiveSync is loaded on your computer, and that the drivers are working properly by connecting your Treo and making sure it can sync.
With your Treo connected to your PC, double click on “index.hta” to start Palm’s upgrade wizard and follow the prompts.
BOOTLOADER METHOD via SD Card
When updating by SD card, the software version in the about screen WILL NOT change. Normally, that is updated by the wizard as the final step after successful ROM load. Just be aware that your software version will not be accurately reflected, even though you WILL be updated to WM6.
To use this method, download either of the wizards and extract the file CHEEIMG_FW.nbh from the zip. RENAME this file to CHEEIMG.nbh. (I am aware that there is already a file by that name in the zip, but it’s not the actual ROM.)
Connect your SD card to your computer and format it with FAT32. It MUST be FAT32 or the upgrade will not succeed.
Copy only the newly renamed CHEEIMG.nbh to the memory card and slot it into the Treo. Connect your Treo to a power source. Boot up the Treo in bootloader mode by holding the PTT button ( the one on the side beneath the volume buttons) while pressing the reset button with your stylus. Bootloader will come up and load the ROM. Follow any on-screen prompts.
