Default inconsistent connection to Vista, can't synch

Problem: Have had the Treo 750 for 2 months now and it's only synched reliably upon connection 3 or 4 times, and when it happens it's a complete surprise. The unit shows as unconnected, but it is. Using a Toshiba laptop, Vista os and Outlook 2007.

Attempts to fix:
Have spent hours and hours on the phone w/ Palm techs, who have no answers that work. Have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled MS Mobile Device Center, used docking cradles and the supplied synch cord all usb ports. Booted everything in every possible combination. Tried Outlook dx (Help etc) Nothing works.

Worked on my XP, OK 2003 just fine.

Device manager shows it as a portable storage device (the few times it's synched) When WMDC shows it as unconnected, it sometimes shows on the Device Manager as a u usb device (with a carat over the initial 'u')

Anyone have any ideas?

There are a couple of issues that i have noticed with Vista. When you first installed the phone on Vista did it recognized it properly ?.
When plugged into usb should be visable in my computer if installed correctly.
Make sure that when you try to sync with outlook that you go to Task Manager and make sure that outlook is not running in the background. If it is running in the background you will not be able to sync. Outlook 2007 does not shutdown correctly some times.

Default inconsistent, now non existant connecting w/ Vista

Thanks for responding. Honestly, I don't remember because it's been since May, but I think it was a problem them because I thought at the time that Vista was a total waste of time and money.

When the device shows up at all on the task manager, it shows not as a Portable Storage device, which is the setting that has worked on rare occassions, but as "other device", asks to search for the driver, doesn't find it and here we go again. I have screen shots in a Word doc if anyone wants to look at them, just email me. (Leslie@MasteryConsulting.net)

I've closed Outlook and it's still not showing as connected. Palm folks keep wanting to focus on the connection settings, which is a moot point if my laptop doesn't show it as connected. They sent me to the phone support and after 45 minutes I got disconnected w/o speaking to a rep.

All suggestions welcomed.

The first time i installed the Treo on Vista it could not find the drivers for it. I was lucky that I made a restore point prior to installing the phone. I had to use the restore point 3 times before it picked the phone up as aTreo 750.

Sounds to me that is your problem, the only suggestion i have is to make a restore point, completely do a uninstall of all palm programs, do a registry search to remove any entries pointing towards the Treo and try again like a fresh install and hopefully it will pick up your Treo properly. Once it recognizes the Treo properly it should hopefully sync correctly.

Default inconsistent connection to Vista, can't synch

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll has my computer person to look into it--not feeling confident enough to go into some of those areas, especially considering all the troubles I'm having.

Default Synching trouble-750

Wonder of wonders, out of the clear blue it began to synch, but then showed an error message, Then, I picked up the unit without disconnecting it and it showed as connected. Then disconnected. It seems the connector cable doesn't seat correctly. What's weird is that I've gotten at least 3 different error messages throughout the months and the device manager has shown different configurations.

It does seem a sloppy and rough connection system for a delicate connection.

Hope this helps someone else out there struggling.
