Losing signal
Hi everyone. Ive had my 750 since they were first released and have never had any problems with it. The past few days have been different however. I've been losing cell service (AT&T) several times a day for periods lasting a few minutes to a few hours. Thinking it may just be a flaw on AT&T's part I kept my wife's phone with me (not a treo but AT&T). When mine loses service her phone is still working fine. I've tried turning off the radio and then turning it back on and also have done a soft reset. Neither help. Could this be a sign that my phone is on its death bed? I tried using the search but couldn't find anything helpful. It is running WM6 and has been for the last few months without any problems.
Thanks in advance,
Doug

Are you saying that it looses signal because the icon shows it searching or because you can't make a call? Mine would show it searching and I thought the same thing. Then I loaded Treo Alerts http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...postcount=1473 and the digital display shows signal when the icon shows searching. I tried to make a call and it works! It seems that the icon will show that it is searching for a signal even when it has service. If you haven't tried yet, try a call when it shows no signal and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply. No it actually can not find a signal. It has dropped two calls now because of this. I have also tried to make calls while it is searching and it only gives me an error saying I have no service. The battery also discharges a lot faster since the phone increases the power to the radio to search for a signal.

That's true, the only phone that I had that actually lost signal when there was service present was defective.

Too bad its out of warranty now (by a couple weeks). Ill contact Palm on Monday and see if they can make an exception. Otherwise I guess I go phone shopping. Thanks guys and galls.

Question: Did they recently upgrade your area to 3G?
The reason I ask is that I'm suspicious that folks in partial or spotty 3G coverage are being affected by the phone attempting to toggle between 3G and GPRS bands.
While it doesn't explain why the Treo isn't recovering as it should, it may at least offer some insight into what's causing it. It could even be a poor hand-off on the carrier's side.
Assuming that your wife's phone only does GPRS/EDGE and not 3G/HSDPA, it could also explain why her phone was unaffected.
Again, this is just a theory.

Well I went to AT&T last night to look at new phones. While I was there I was talking to one of the reps who also has a 750. He did some research on their end and didn't see an problems. He reset both voice and data plans and now everything works just fine again. Ive never heard of anything like this happening. But at least it works now.
To answer your question fastlerner they are in the process of going 3G. It isnt up yet but he did say that the pipelines are in place and should be in a couple weeks. So I guess it could have been then source of the conflict.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Cool. Glad you're working again.
Just goes to show, don't be too quick to blame the device. The device programming on the carrier side has enough features to choke a whale, and half the customer service reps don't even know how they all work together. Glad you got a good one.
Too many times in the past I've had to escalate to their REAL tech support when a CSR punches the wrong button or keys the wrong thing in and wacky things start happening. Fortunately, my 750 experience has so far been relatively free of Carrier screw ups.
