Without knowing your occupation or company here is my advice and my opinion. I worked for a company where privacy was not only a customer satisfaction issue, it was to be in compliance with the law. IT has more security & privacy issues now than ever before. So to accomplish this, they lock down the company assets so no one can change the image (software & security levels) of company owned PCs and data. I think if you shared with them that you are looking for a way to stay productive and keep you calendar items with you on the Treo they may have a solution or at least look at one, especially if you have others in the office that share the same desire. Personally I don't want my personal information or my company's data floating around on someone's smartphone outside of my control. While you and the other 99% of the employees would not do this and would care for this data, there the one that would not and this is what IT is protecting against by the cold no of policy.
However there are so many Treo, other smartphone and Blackberry users out there that IT should have a solution to allow you to carry your calendar item and other non-private information. I don't know of any way to sync your Treo without installing some type of software. Maybe asking the best questions to IT over a lunch may provide you with good results.
Good luck.
