Trouble with Xpressmail and Gmail

I've had my Treo 750 for about 10 days. My problems began when I learned that my corporate mail server is too old to use Activesync. I set up Xpressmail which works some of the time, but freezes constantly and must be reactivated by turning the phone on and off. I'm guessing this is caused by the phone switching back and forth between the Edge network and 3G.

My next idea was to start using browser-based gmail more often, but I can only partially access my gmail account using the internet browser. The inbox appears correctly but no sending operations work. I can't send, forward or reply. Nothing happens at all when you click on these functions. It's not sending a signal to the internet to perform an operation. I've tried resets and Cingular and Palm support to no avail. Anyone know how to solve either of these problems?
