As I expected, the Treo with Office 6.1 had no issues opening the earlier Office 2003 files.
Once I downloaded the Office 2007 compatibility pack, Office 2003 had no issues opening files created by the Treo.
Bonus: Both my PC and Treo are now compatible with Office 2007 files and am able to save in that format from the PC as well if I choose to.

Indeed thanks for the update. I gather from what you are saying if I do the update to 6.1 I need to download the Office 2007 compatability pack for Office 2003 for it to work correctly?

I will have to see what compatibility options are available for Office 2004 on the Mac, which is what I use (waiting for the Office 2008 upgrade to arrive).

Yes. Mobile Office 6.1 = Office 2007. As soon as I attempted to open a file created on the Treo with 6.1, Office 2003 prompted me to download the compatibility pack automatically. I imagine it should do this on attempting to open any office 2007 document.
Just make sure to go to office.microsoft.com to check for updates and do any service packs or patches before loading the compatibility pack.
So far it's working great.

Read on line at brighthand.com that the recent Barcelona conference did not include microsoft formally unveiling wm 6.1 as was expected so many devices unabl to be seen in ful operating mode such as the new sony erickson experia device. Not the same as mobile office but interesting none the less.
