The 2 gb cards that are not SDHC are on a totally different rating system. See below:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card

    Speeds
There are different speed grades available which are measured with the same system as CD-ROMs, in multiples of 150 kB/s (1x = 150 kB/s). Basic cards transfer data up to six times (6x) the data rate of the standard CD-ROM speed (900 kB/s vs. 150 kB/s). High-speed cards are made with higher data transfer rates like 66x (10 MB/s), and high-end cards have speeds of 150x or higher. Note that maximum read speed and maximum write speed may be different, with maximum write speed typically lower than maximum read speed. Some digital cameras require high-speed cards (write speed) to record video smoothly or capture multiple still photographs in rapid succession. As of December 2005, most devices comply to the SD card specification 1.01, maximum speed of 66x. Higher speeds of up to 133x are defined by specification 1.1.

I think your card is at 1.1 spec, which should be plenty fast enough.

So, will using an adapter affect its performance?

I really doubt that the adapter will affect performance. The adapter is nothing more than a contact to contact size expansion, there isn't any electronic conversion taking place.

Buy.com has the 4gb SDHC card back for under $30.

I know this the class 4 card (and not the slightly faster class 6), but may pick one up this time. Hard to pass up a good deal like this.

Has anybody successfully used a card bigger than 4 gigs in their 755p?

4gb is the largest I've used, but with 8gb miniSDHC cards out there, it would be nice to know it works in the 755p.

So far, nothing I've seen from anyone using a card larger than 4gb.

The Treo 755 only supports up to a 8GB SD Card according to the information I was given by a Palm representative. I have not yet had the opportunity to test it, I will advise.

The information that I've read on transfer rates indicates that an adapter has an extremely negligible effect on speeds, hope that helps. I use a microSD with a Mini adapter... the best thing about it is that it is very multi-purpose - I can (with the included adaptors) put this card into literally anything. Hope this helps.

Wait a minute. I read the Treo 755 only goes up to 4gb.
