Default gmail sync to phone need only what is in my inbox folder

I currently have my treo set up with my gmail accounts email. I want to only sync to my treo what is CURRENTLY in my inbox. I am using versamail to sync. When I currently press the Get button it will sync to my inbox, but it will sync email that either I have already read and deleted like a month or so ago. Example I only have 5 emails currently in my gmail inbox, but it is trying to download 131 new messages...I only want it to grab the 5 in my inbox. I do use labels in my gmail and store old emails using them if this matters...Thanks for anyone help in advance..

well, you need to set this up on your gmail account on a computer. Log onto your account and click Settings - Forwarding and POP/IMAP. I've never used Versamail on my treo, I used ChatterEmail. But I believe you can set up Versamail for either IMAP or POP3. IMAP will make changes to all places where you read mail, and POP3 will only affect the place that you are reading it (like on your phone) If you want to update the gmail server by what you do on your phone, then use IMAP. If you only want to read and delete stuff on your phone, and leave the gmail server untouched - use POP3 and check "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on" and it will only download what comes in the future, not download all your tons of previous mail.

I use the Sprint Mobile Email for Palm program (available as a free download on Sprint's content store via your phone). It provides push email for Gmail, which works very well.

I'm able to keep on top of new messages to my Gmail throughout the day. You can also set the times it checks so it's not a battery drain.
