Default Hotsync crashes every time!

Hello all,

glad to join this forum and look forward to using the group-mind to learn more about these amazing devices we have running our lives now (the robots are taking over!). Have a little problem... TIA for any help you can give me.

I have a Sprint Treo 755 and use it w/Palm Desktop 4.2 on my Macbook running OSX 10.4... I had trouble syncing a couple months ago, after having it work great for several months with Missing Sync (and of couse Hotsync was fine before that, because you have to Hotsync first to even install Missing Sync). So basically it just went out on me one day, wouldn't sync, and even worse, crashed the Treo if I tried to sync at all. Usually sync w/Bluetooth, but even the USB cable sync didn't work. Soon as Hotsync button (hardware or software) was pressed, BLAM! Treo reset itself. Not a hard reset, thank god, but still... uh, pretty annoying and not at all helpful. Did what I could to fix it... uninstalled Missing Sync, tried again w/just Hotsync... but nothing worked. Crashed instantly on any sync attempt! Took it in to Sprint service center and they couldn't do anything with it so they gave me a new (or refurbished) one. I backed up the old one to SD card and restored it onto new one. Now I'm trying to sync the new Treo and guess what? BLAM! Crashes as soon as Hotsync is pressed.

OK, so... Since I restored all my data from my original Treo I think I can assume it must be a software-based issue... I can try another Hard Reset and see if that works, but then how do I get the current data off of my SD card w/out corrupting the Treo again? Any ideas? Now I have most of my data for last few months split between the Treo & the laptop. I run my life and business off of these things so it will be a bit disrupting to lose one in favor of the other, now that they're not talking any more! Does anyone have any info about this type of problem? Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm running Leopard so I can't troubleshoot possible issues with Tiger personally...but if it were me, I'd do a backup of my Treo and hard drive, and hard reset the Treo, and reload Tiger fresh, reinstall and try again.

Thanks for your input. I realize that the hard reset of the Treo 755 at the very least is required here. That's the first thing on the agenda. I will try that before reinstalling the Mac OS. Tiger has worked fine w/Palm for awhile, and it's most likely a Treo software issue IMHO.. but I really want to ensure no loss of my current Treo data (3 months worth!) somehow. I'm using Backup software on the Treo scheduled to backup/update all the data everyday @ midnight.. Does anyone know if I can sync to my Palm Desktop with Backup from an SD card reader? Can I salvage that data from the SD card & get it into the Palm Dasktop on my laptop somehow? That way I can at least salvage all the new data on the Treo before I hard reset it, which is kinda the crux of my dilemma now. TIA for any help w/this.

Default Memory Card Backup

If you want to have a secondary backup of your data, you could purchase a memory card and then download a memory card-based backup program. I use RBackup (Resco) personally, I know a number of people have good luck with Backup Buddy. RBackup serves as a full HotSync that will backup everything from contacts to ringtones to settings. This will serve as a backup in yet another location to help prevent data loss. Also, it's nice to have your data backup on the go. For example my phone crashed the other day in the line at airport security and I was able to hard reset and restore my device before making it through the metal detector (I guess that says something about the wait time at security too...) instead of having to go blind after the hard reset until I could get to my computer. Just a suggestion.

If you are doing a hard reset due to a software problem and then execute a restore using the latest restore file or hot sync, or whatever, you will end up with the problem continuing. If there is a problem, a backup is required, then you need to take the time to determine what the problem is. If you cannot, then you just gotta execute another hard reset, install the PIM files (make sure they are ok) and then install the applications one at a time (especially the ones you are unsure of).

Thanks Tim, I probably wasn't clear on my dilemma. But I have my Treo backed up to an SD card already. What I don't know how to do is sync the backed-up data on the SD card to my laptop-based Palm Desktop. That way, when I hard-reset my Treo (which I will have to do to even begin to get to the root of the problem I have with Treo crashing on every Hotsync), I don't lose the 3 months of data that I have already backed up. I can at this point assume it's unsafe for me to Restore the Treo from the SD card Backup... I've already done that with my new, replacement Treo and the same problem persists. So there's probably something corrupt in the backed-up data that is causing the Hotsync crashes.

The problem is twofold:
1) Can't Hotsync from the Treo, period. It crashes every time, Bluetooth or USB cable. But I can and have backed up to an SD card...
2) I have valuable data from the Treo already backed up to the SD card, but don't know how to get the Treo data on the SD card into my Palm Desktop. I'd like to sync my SD card to my Palm Desktop as if it were the Treo, if that's at all possible.

Hopefully that clears up the nature of my problem. Any suggestions or ideas appreciated. TIA
