Default moving from 650 to 755p

I didn't see this topic out here after doing a couple of searches and wanted to list some things I did when switching from a Treo 650 to the Treo 755p.

I decided to take the route of simply syncing my 650, unplugging it and the sync cable and then plugging in my 755p and syncing it directly. While this worked, it created some issues that I noticed later on.

Some of these issues were related to how HotSync works when syncing multiple Palm devices on the same computer. It simply takes the last full backup from the last Palm device you synched (in this case, the 650) and restoring ALL files to the newest Palm device (the 755p). This created a lot of duplicate files (Documents To Go was one application that put the older version on, even the 755p was smart enough to run the new version). There were also a lot of other .prc files from the 650 that didn't belong on the 755p (older version of mRing was one I found). Again, the 755p was smart enough to run the newer versions of these programs, but still leaving the older restored files from my 650 still on the device.

One of these older versions was a file called ZLib.prc. There were two versions of the file: one taking up space and another in ROM. This was the case above with the duplicate programs/files. Once I removed the older on disk version of Zlib.prc, my 755p became extra snappy... like it should be. Over the last two days since I got my 755p and did the first time HotSync, pressing menu buttons, scrolling and just about every action was slow and had a lag and delay to it. I don't have that now that I've done some clean up.

Another thing that's common, but forgot about since it's been almost 18 months since I switched Treos, is to set in HotSync for the Entourage conduit to be Macintosh overwrites Handheld. The first few syncs didn't transfer any of the contacts, tasks and calendar items. Once I did the overwrite, it all came over.

Another issue I had was getting Note Pad over. I used it on my previous Treo/Palm and wanted it here. Make sure you bring over all of the related files (i was missing one of the compression files, which made reading any of my notes impossible). Check out this link for any help:

So far, just about everything is put back the way it was on my 650. There's a few apps I'm taking my time with, like Facer Pro. While I like that app a lot on my 650, I've going to go native on the 755p for a while.

mRing needs an upgrade to version 4. Cleaning up the older version was not done with the upgrade.

FileZ is a very much needed app on the Treo for doing any manual cleanup.

Anyway, that's what I have so far. If anyone has questions or any other input, post away.

See my thread for "Upgrading from 650 to 700P." There is plenty of good advise and many ways/thoughts on the issue. The instruction manual and service provider both say to uninstall to old desktop software for the 650 and install the new for the 700P as it is backward compatible but not the other direction. It will work for both phones should you still have the 650 in use. I would ass.u.me (and you should know what that means!) that it should be the same for the 755P.

Though I have yet had the time/energy/effort to change from the 650 to the 700P and reported my progress/issues to the forum as promised, this should just be considered as FYI only. Further investigation on this matter should be considered. I am now considering the 755P and will most likely be selling/giving my new in box 700P to one of my employees.

Just a thought and good luck.

I also found the following thread in this discussion (along with many others) with the same response as the one I offered to your question. I therefore no longer ass.u.me that you MUST use the software that was included with your new phone when upgrading. Again, the software IS backward compatible. The thread may be found via a search and is entitled "I cant sync. help please!"

The thing that clued me in to why the version of Palm HotSync that was installed for the 650 would work for the 755p was that the version was identical, even down to file sizes and dates for the various program files.

Now I know that there are some differences in the Palm Desktop versions that come with various Palm devices, but it was worth the try to simply leave the current version installed and then if things didn't work, go through the method of doing the uninstall and installing the version on the CD that came with the 755p.

Thanks for pointing to the previous threads. Much appreciated.
