Default Verizon 755p as modem

I have the unlimited data plan with Verizon. When I tried to use the phone as a modem on my Macbook, the page that opens on my Macbook browser is a Verizon page that wants me to pay an additional $15 a month for 5GB max. It will not allow me to go to any other web site. I know there is an issue with people's accounts being cancelled for over use but I would be using my Mac for very limited web use.

I have not asked Verizon about this yet. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

John

Have you looked at USBModem, I understand it works with Macs.

So if we did want to sync our computer's internet through the phone, we have to pay an additional cost on top of the monthly cellphone bill? Or is that only for Macs? (I use VZAccess mobile web modem at work and it'd be cool to set up at home, esp. since i'm moving soon to a temporary location and wouldn't mind not having to pay setup fees for net access)

Hi:

If you are non-mac, take a look at PdaNet for the 755p here. I am not sure if Verizon detects that, but they may notice heavy data usage if you use it extensively. I do understand Verizon loves to cripple features and charge for everything they possibly can, but I am not a Verizon customer. Perhaps others who have used it can clarify more...

There should not be a charge to use your treo as a modem unless it is something with verizon. I would check with them to see if they have that feature enabled on their system. You might tell them when traveling you would like to use the treo as a modem for a laptop to check mail. They might hedge if they know you want to use it that way all the time.

You know Sprint is unlimited and I don't believe they care how much you use it. Of all the carriers it seems that verizon scr-ws with people and Rodgers has problems with their system.

Again, just a caution with Verizon. I believe that to use the VZ Manager, you will have to fork over an additional $15 a month for tethering since that would be logging into their servers, I think. That is why I suggested the one-time purchase of PdaNet. Verizon never met a feature they didn't want to charge for.

I don't think Sprint charges, but I could be wrong. In any case, I do believe that if you start connecting for three hours a day, at some point Verizon will send you a letter either warning you to stop tethering and sign up for it or they may just cut you off?? They also may just start billing you because of the amount of data used.

By all means the OP should contact them, anonymously if possible or maybe in a store, to ask how that works and if occasional tethering is permissable. Understand that store reps and phone reps are often wrong too.

Troll around this site (I tried "Verizon Treo Modem" as the search term and saw a number of threads) because I think you will find a bunch of previous posts about Verizon and using a Treo as a modem with them and look around the Internet too. But don't forget to come back...

What?

I do believe PdaNet was what I recommended and I also suggested the OP search around for more details. I hope you aren't suggesting that because two or three others in one thread said something, what they said is the final authority. Who knows how long those people hook up to PdaNet and that was just another caution...I do believe I recall seeing threads where people were getting notified they were using too much data for what was considered "normal" usage, but hey, I have been wrong before and I will be wrong again. That also could have been a long time ago and maybe things have changed. All the more reason to hope the other user will do their own investigation and make their own decision based on their own findings.

Sometimes you confuse me plunker. If you would like I will discontinue responding to anything and let you true Treo owners take the helm and I will just watch, okay? In one thread you indicate I ask a lot of questions and in this one I don't give enough????

Now you can call me SteveTaz the shadow.... I give up.

<sigh>

Thanks! I looked briefly at the program and it looks like something I'd probably want to get into - I just need a bit more money first. ;) I get the feeling VZ might notice my data usage as I'm pretty internet heavy, but I can slip over to a local cafe and do most of my interwebbing on the wireless there if it becomes a problem.
